“I don’t need it.”

Nora didn’t need the investment—especially not from someone like David.

She had never liked David. His daughter had made a grave mistake, yet he hadn’t offered a single word of apology. Instead, he tried to throw money at the problem, as if everything could be solved with a check.

Arrogant. Distant.

“I don’t need Mr. Cooper’s money,” she said flatly. “I’ve already told you—someone has to take responsibility for what happened. Either your daughter faces prison, or you provide evidence that Eleanor put her up to it.”

“Nora, you’re pushing your luck.” Mrs. Quinn finally snapped, unable to hold back any longer.

She could see what Nora was doing: pushing David to turn against Eleanor. And David, desperate to protect his daughter, might just do something drastic.

Nora almost laughed. “You kidnapped my son, and now you’re accusing me of going too far? Is that it? In your eyes, does a child’s life mean nothing? Or do you expect me to just roll over and let you have your way?”

She was no longer that daughter Mrs. Quinn could bully at will.

Mrs. Quinn’s voice trembled with anger. “We’re still family, no matter what.”

She was out of options now, reduced to appealing to sentiment.

But Nora and Daniel hadn’t even reconciled, much less remarried.

To Nora, Mrs. Quinn’s plea sounded almost comical.

“Family?” Nora shot her a cold, mocking look. “How do you even have the nerve to say that?”

Mrs. Quinn’s face turned white, then red, then a mottled shade of green. It was almost impressive to watch.

“Nora, must you pin all of this on me?” Eleanor asked, her voice trembling, eyes shining with feigned innocence.

Nora’s tone was icy and clear. “I already told you—it’s up to Mr. Cooper.”

“You…” Eleanor started, but her composure slipped.

She knew full well that Daniel, her greatest support, hadn’t uttered a word in her defense since Nora entered the room.
