Mrs. Chambers spoke bluntly. “Can a leopard change its spots?”
Brian nearly lost his composure, his face flushing red.
“You—”
He swallowed the rest of his angry retort, biting back words best left unsaid.
Donna opened her mouth to argue, but Daniel cut in, “Aunt Donna, I’d appreciate it if you stayed out of this.”
Donna grew agitated. “You’re just going to stand by and watch your parents get divorced?”
“I support their divorce,” Daniel replied flatly.
Honestly, he thought, this house wouldn’t feel any different with or without Brian. In fact, he’d suffered more than his fair share of scoldings and beatings growing up, all because of Brian.
Donna glanced at Nora, who was quietly eating her dinner, and, unable to vent her frustration elsewhere, turned her attention to her. Her tone, as always, was sugary-sweet—fake to the core.
“Nora, we’re all trying to discuss something important here. Why are you still eating?”
She sounded thoroughly annoyed.
Mr. Hogan Chambers, already nursing a headache from all the arguing, shot his daughter a glare. “Nora’s expecting, remember? She needs to eat.”
Donna faltered, forced to soften her tone. “Nora, what’s your opinion on their divorce?”
Nora set down her fork, leisurely pulled a napkin from the holder, and dabbed at her lips.
“I think it’s great,” she said.
She gave Mrs. Chambers a pointed look, then turned her gaze to Brian. “In my opinion, cheating isn’t a one-time mistake. If someone’s done it once, odds are they’ll do it again. No point keeping them around—better to call it quits.”
Mrs. Chambers’ clenched hands relaxed a little, surprise flickering across her face.
She knew Nora didn’t particularly like her. Yet here she was, speaking up for her.
“Nora, is this really your attitude toward family matters?” Donna asked, displeased.
Wasn’t a divorce in the family something disgraceful to talk about?
Nora considered for a moment, then changed tack. “You’re right, maybe divorce isn’t the only option.”
