“Alright.”
Louis scooped Payne up into his arms and carried him away.
Nora was about to head off to wash up when Daniel caught her wrist.
His voice was low and a little rough. “Why are you acting like I’m just some outsider?”
He knew it was all for the child’s sake, but that didn’t stop jealousy from creeping in. The image of Nora standing on tiptoe to kiss Payne goodnight was enough to guarantee he wouldn’t get any sleep tonight.
Nora tried to pull her hand free, her tone calm and distant. “You’re reading too much into this.”
It was obvious—her attitude had changed from just a moment ago.
Daniel’s grip tightened. “Louis is leaving in a day. If Payne can’t bear to see him go, would you go with them?”
There was a hint of hope in his voice, cautious and barely perceptible. He was hoping for a different answer.
But Nora didn’t hesitate.
“Of course.”
Daniel let out a bitter laugh. He’d known that would be her answer.
Still, he couldn’t help but ask, even if he hated the response.
He released her wrist, and Nora wasted no time hurrying away.
Daniel sat alone in the living room for a while. Payne’s toys were scattered all over the sofa and rug—mostly building blocks.
That little guy really loved his blocks. He’d probably grow up to be a bright kid.
Rolling up the sleeves of his slate-grey shirt, Daniel shrugged off his jacket and began sorting the blocks by color and size.
A housekeeper came over, but he waved her away.
A few minutes later, another hand reached out, picking up some blocks from across the room and dropping them into the basket.
It was Louis.
He was dressed casually, hair still damp from a shower, looking effortlessly handsome and gentle. The kind of guy people called a “nice guy”—no wonder Nora couldn’t let go.
Daniel’s thoughts wandered.
Louis had already cleaned up most of the mess.
“Daniel, are you thinking about Nora?” Louis broke the silence first.
Daniel snapped back to attention and picked up a stray block, answering coolly, “I was thinking… she really does like you.”
