Trash Husband, I'm the Top novel Chapter 74

“Eleanor called me, hoping I’d come back and take charge.”

The Chambers Group had no shortage of rivals, and the slightest hint of trouble was enough to set off a media frenzy. Already, people were spinning the story that Eleanor wasn’t as capable as the former director, Aurora. Some even claimed Daniel played favorites, which was why the perfume launch had gone awry. The old rumors—his alleged affair and longstanding friendship with Eleanor—were suddenly back in the spotlight.

In short, things were looking grim for both Eleanor and Daniel.

Aurora cupped her hands around a mug of cooling tea and nodded in agreement. “You really should go back. She can’t manage without you.”

Daniel heard the bite in her words and replied coolly, “She’s the head of R&D now. She’ll have to deal with these things on her own. I can’t step in every time something goes wrong.”

Aurora stared at him, unblinking, surprise flickering in her eyes.

“You’re not worried about her?”

Daniel rubbed his temples, clearly exhausted. “How far she goes from here, what she becomes—that’s up to her. I’ve told you before, she’s just a friend. You’re the one who keeps doubting our relationship.”

Aurora’s expression turned icy. She didn’t want to discuss it any further. No matter how innocent things might seem between him and Eleanor, the fact remained: he had left his wife and child for her.

“You should go back. The Almanac of Air is important, and so is your health,” Aurora said, her tone almost perfunctory.

Daniel had no illusions that Aurora actually cared about his wellbeing. She just wanted him out of the way, back in Fairvale where he belonged. But he had no intention of leaving.

“It’s just a stomach bug. Give me a few more days and I’ll be fine.”

Aurora clenched her fingers tightly. She marveled at just how thick-skinned he could be.

“Aren’t you afraid Eleanor won’t be able to handle this? What if she falls apart and comes running back to you in tears?”

“Mrs. Chambers doesn’t even work there anymore—why are you so concerned?” Daniel shot back without missing a beat.

Aurora fell silent.

Aurora waited outside, arms folded.

When Daniel emerged, he was even paler than before.

Aurora’s resolve softened. Besides, she had no intention of facing Mrs. Chambers’s wrath if anything happened to him.

Telling herself she had no choice, she tidied up the guest room and let Daniel stay.

He spent two nights there, his condition gradually improving.

The phone rang often, usually Eleanor’s number flashing on the screen.

But this time, Daniel didn’t leave.
