“What did you just say?”
“The formula’s been leaked?”
“That’s impossible.”
Aurora’s face went pale, her whole body turning cold as if the blood had drained from her veins.
Early that morning, their rival company suddenly announced a new perfume, and the formula was nearly identical to The Chambers Group’s soon-to-be-released fragrance, The Almanac of Air.
The Chambers Group immediately called the police. After a quick investigation, suspicion fell squarely on Aurora.
“It wasn’t me. I’ve been in the lab for the past two days—I haven’t left, not even once,” Aurora insisted.
“There’s security footage from the lab,” someone noted.
At that moment, the office door burst open with a loud smack.
Eleanor strode in, voice echoing down the hallway.
“Aurora, I heard you sold the perfume formula to the competition?”
“I know you don’t like me, but you can’t seriously be so spiteful that you’d do something like this for revenge.”
“What about Dan? What’s he supposed to do now?”
With just a few sentences, Eleanor had handed Aurora both a motive and a verdict, all in front of a half-open door where everyone outside could hear every word.
Aurora shot her a cold glare. “Got any proof?”
Eleanor shrank back, shoulders hunched, fear flickering in her eyes as she took a step away.
“I’m sorry, Aurora. I didn’t mean it like that—I just panicked,” she stammered, putting on her best impression of regret.
Aurora didn’t have time for her theatrics. She turned to Daniel. “I told you, I didn’t do this.”
Daniel moved closer, taking her trembling hand in his. “The police will get to the bottom of it,” he said quietly.
Aurora’s eyes grew colder.
“You don’t believe me, do you?”
Of course he didn’t. If he did, he wouldn’t have shown up with the police.
Her mind flashed to that day in Millbrook, when he’d asked her to give him one more chance.
If trust isn’t even possible, what good is anything else between them?
Hours slipped by. Finally, an officer handed her a pen.
She was released on bail, but forbidden to leave Fairvale and required to check in whenever summoned.
After signing the papers, she spotted her husband waiting for her outside.
“Aurora, I’ll take you home,” he said gently.
Aurora walked toward him, step by step, her gaze sharp and searching.
Daniel’s heart thudded in his chest.
“Aurora—”
She stopped in front of him, her voice steady and distant. “Eleanor’s the head of R&D again, isn’t she?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Let me explain—”
“No need, Daniel. Don’t bother.”
A bitter smile twisted Aurora’s lips. “It must have taken some creative thinking, coming up with all this just to help her out of a mess.”
