Despite her injuries, Yvonne was deeply moved by what she had just witnessed. She wished her own mother could have loved her that way, but her mother was long gone. She turned her face away, and a tear slipped silently down her cheek.

The officer watching them was visibly affected too. “There’s been a major homicide here. We’ve been ordered to seal off the entire Stone residence. If you’ve finished your business, please leave immediately.”

Natalie and Flynn had expected that. When the officer said it out loud, Flynn quickly replied, “Of course. We’ll go right away. But my brother–in–law went after the sniper and hasn’t come back yet. Can we wait for him?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Waylon, we have to follow procedure.”

The moment the man said that, Flynn understood. “All right. If you hear anything about him, please let us know.”

“Understood.”

Flynn and Natalie each took hold of Ruby’s arms to support her, while Yvonne followed behind. The four of them started toward the exit.

Suddenly, Ruby spoke up. “Yvonne! Where’s Yvonne? We can’t leave without any of the Stone children. Come here, sweetheart! That bastard Logan–how could he hurt you like this?”

Yvonne’s eyes turned red at the sound of her name and the tenderness in Ruby’s voice. “I’m fine.”

The officer watched them go. Instead of stepping outside himself, he closed the door from the inside.

A cold sweat broke out on Flynn’s palms. He whistled sharply, and several men in black emerged from nearby shadows.

“Mr. Waylon!”

“My mother’s not well, and my sister’s shaken. Get them out of here now!” Flynn ordered.

The men nodded immediately.

Natalie looked at Flynn, worry etched on her face. “Aren’t you coming with us?”

“This is our family home. I need to see what’s going on.”

“See what? The police have already sealed it off! You’re coming with me!”

Natalie rarely lost her temper, but this time her voice trembled with anger. She knew that officer wasn’t real—how could she let Flynn stay behind? There were real officers outside, but whoever that man was, his motives were unknown. She wasn’t going to risk Flynn’s life.

Flynn opened his mouth to argue, but before he could, a loud bang came from inside the house. Everyone froze.

“What was that?”

Flynn instinctively turned to go back, but Natalie grabbed his arm. “Don’t! Let’s go!”

She didn’t know what had happened inside, but she knew one thing for sure–this place was cursed. If anything happened to Flynn, the Stone family would be finished.

Flynn saw the fear and determination in her eyes. “All right. We’ll do it your way.”

They hurried out of the living room with Yvonne in tow. None of them dared think too hard about what might be happening behind them.
