Chapter 467
Chapter 467
Liam burst out the door just as Tristan pulled up, having driven himself.
“Sorry, I forgot you were filming today.”
“It’s fine. Have you been able to reach Lessie?”
Tristan shook his head. “How did you get away? Are you done filming?”
“No, the director was really understanding. He made up an excuse so I could leave early.”
Tristan nodded, put his foot down on the accelerator, and they sped off toward the Mortons‘ estate.
The first thing Esme did was call Alessia, but after getting no answer, she immediately dialed Mia Linden and Joyce Danton.
No one could get through to Alessia. The tension among them grew, but aside from praying and pacing, there was nothing left to do.
Stella and her friends also got word right away, but instead of heading to the Mortons‘ estate, they pulled every string they had, trying to find out anything about what was happening in Hillside Village.
But the outlook was grim. The disaster had hit out of nowhere, blindsiding everyone. The affected area was huge, and while more help was being sent, it would be a while before anyone knew the full scope of what was happening.
“Has Cole heard?” Queenie suddenly remembered him.
“Justin went straight to Whitley Group’s headquarters as soon as he heard, I figured you all would come here, so I waited for you. I tried calling Cole too, but he didn’t pick up. My guess is, he knows by now.”
“Either way, let’s check in at Whitley Group first.” For Cole, there was only one person left in the world he truly cared about–Alessia.
No one wanted to imagine what state he’d be in after hearing the news.

They nodded and hurried off to meet Cole and the others. But when they arrived at Whitley Group’s offices, the place was eerily quiet, not at all the frantic chaos they’d expected.
Only Justin and Larkin Yardley were there.
“Where is he?” Stella asked.
“He’s already left.” Justin gave a helpless shrug.
“I figured as much.” The three of them exchanged knowing looks.
“Let’s head to the Mortons‘ and regroup. I doubt anyone could stop him now.”
“What about Max Tate?” Queenie remembered the other wild card.
“That maniac? He’s probably halfway there already. Wouldn’t be surprised if he and Cole end up at the same landing spot.”
Commercial flights there had been suspended hours ago. Cole had simply chartered a helicopter. By now, he was already on his way.
“How did he seem?” It was clear she meant Cole.
Justin shook his head. “Calm–frighteningly so. He handed everything over to Larkin, made a call for the helicopter, and left.”
“You didn’t even try to stop him?”
Justin shook his head again, a shiver running down his spine at the memory of Cole’s expression.
His eyes had become bottomless, the blue dark and void of any light, like the calm before a storm–cold, impenetrable, and deeply unsettling.
As Cole’s closest friend, Justin understood him better than anyone. Trying to stop him now would mean losing him as a friend forever, but worse than that, Cole would be haunted by regret and guilt for the rest of his life.
Rather than sitting around doing nothing, they had to act.

“Enough talking. Let’s get to the Mortons“,” Penny Sullivan said, her expression grim.
No one wasted another second. They rushed out, eager to make a plan.
Coincidentally, the three Morton brothers were just about to leave as well. In the blink of an eye, the estate was almost deserted, left with just the Mortons and the two youngest kids.
“Will Sis be okay?” Ivan’s eyes brimmed with tears.
“Of course. Alessia Tate is amazing–she can do anything. She’ll be fine,” York replied, his words full of conviction. His eyes were red too, but he stubbornly refused to let a tear fall.
Karen gently patted both their heads, saying nothing.
Brendan sat nearby, uneasy and silent. He didn’t dare turn on the TV for fear the news would make the kids even more anxious. Instead, he just kept refreshing his phone, over and over, desperate for any scrap of good
news.
