"Yeah, we don’t care about that. We only care whether the company’s going to make it or not."

Everyone turned to look at Calliope, hope flickering in their eyes.

Calliope caught their gazes and offered a warm, gentle smile. "Thank you, everyone. I know you all want me to stay, but like Lisette just said, I’m not part of the Jewell family anymore. I don’t have the right to be here."

"And besides, I already sold my shares. Some of you probably already figured that out."

"I appreciate your trust. I called this meeting because I wanted you to hear it from me: I’m leaving the company. So, I want to give you a quick rundown of where things stand before I go."

She glanced over at Monty and a few others. "I’ll leave soon, but not until I’ve covered these things. And like you said, this is a company meeting. Family drama can wait for another time."

Monty looked like he’d bitten into a lemon. But it was obvious—no one here was siding with the Jewell family. They’d all chosen Calliope.

He’d worked with these people for years, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with them through so much, and yet, when it came down to it, they picked Calliope, even though she hadn’t even been here that long.

Monty was furious and hurt. Was he really less than Calliope? Did all those years mean nothing?

Calliope started laying out the state of the company: the numbers, the strategies she’d prepared, the steps she thought they should take if they wanted to keep the business thriving.

Of course, Monty and his crew didn’t hear a word of it. Their minds were stuck on the inheritance Old Mr. Jewell had left. They just wanted their stuff back.

"Callie, please don’t go! The company needs you, we can’t do this without you!"

"Yeah, your plan is great, but nobody else can pull it off like you can!"

"If you leave, the company’s doomed!"

The room filled with pleas and protests, but Calliope only shook her head.

Most of the staff didn’t want Calliope to go.

Monty’s face reddened as the insults flew.

"This is my company! Sure, I might not have as many shares now, but it’s still the Jewell Group! I can give it to whoever I want! Calliope’s a fraud. She just wants to bleed the company dry!"

Right then, the conference room doors swung open. A group of police officers walked in.

"Which one of you is Calliope?"

"Her!" Lisette jumped to her feet, pointing straight at Calliope. "That’s her. She’s been impersonating a member of the Jewell family! I have good reason to believe she murdered the real Calliope and took her place! She swindled the Jewell family out of a fortune! She even poisoned Kermit to death!"
