A Secretive Deal with My Billionaire Boss novel Chapter 156

Chapter 156

Madison

I was deep into reconciling the budget projections for the Manhattan project when my desk phone rang. I picked it up while still typing with my free hand.

Madison Harper speaking.

Miss Harper, I have a Herbert Hayes here to see Mr. Knight. The security desk’s voice crackled through the line.

One moment, please.I checked Alexander’s calendar11:30 AM meetingwhich was right on schedule. Yes, please send him up.

I returned to my spreadsheets, determined to finish before my lunch break. The soft ding of the elevator barely registered until footsteps approached my desk.

I looked up to find an older gentleman standing before me. He was impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit that had clearly been tailored to his frame. Silver hair swept back from a distinguished face marked with laugh lines around his eyes. I guessed him to be in his midfifties.

Good morning,I said, offering a professional smile. You must be Mr. Hayes. Mr. Knight is expecting you. Please, go right in.I gestured toward Alexander’s office door.

Thank you, miss.He nodded politely before walking to Alexander’s door and knocking.

Enter,Alexander’s voice commanded from inside.

Mr. Hayes disappeared into Alexander’s office, closing the door behind him. I returned to my spreadsheet, determined to finish the work before lunch. After twenty minutes of intense focus, the numbers blurred together. I rolled my shoulders and reached for my water bottle.

Muffled voices drifted through the door. 1

I typed faster, wanting to complete my work before any interruptions.

The intercom on my desk buzzed. Ms. Harper, come in here, please.

I grabbed my tablet and smoothed my pencil skirt before entering Alexander’s office. The morning sunlight streamed through the floortoceiling windows, illuminating both men as they stood near Alexander’s desk.

Ms. Harper, this is Herbert Hayes,Alexander said, his voice carrying that authoritative tone he used for business matters. He’ll be joining your team for the Manhattan Project.

I extended my hand. Pleasure to meet you officially, Mr. Hayes.

His handshake was firm. Likewise, Miss Harper. I’ve heard excellent things.

Alexander’s eyes flickered with something unreadable. Mr. Hayes has extensive experience with largescale developments in New York. He’ll be relocating temporarily from our Boston office.

I nodded professionally, mind racing. This was the first I’d heard about additional support. Was Alexander doubting my abilities? Or was the project bigger than I realized?

I look forward to working together,I said, keeping my voice steady.

Mr. Hayes will report to you starting Monday,Alexander added, his gaze fixed on me. I expect you’ll bring him up to speed on our progress.

Of course, Mr. Knight.”

Herbert collected his briefcase. I should be going. I have a flight to catch. He nodded at Alexander.Thank you for the opportunity.

Safe travels,Alexander replied.

Once the door closed behind Herbert, I turned to Alexander. I wasn’t aware we were expanding the

team.

Alexander leaned against his desk, loosening his tie slightly. Is that a problem?

No, just unexpected.I maintained eye contact with Alexander, refusing to look away despite the

flutter of uncertainty in my stomach.

Alexander pushed away from his desk and crossed to the window, silhouette cutting a sharp figure against the Manhattan skyline. Hayes has twenty years of development experience in New York. His connections will be invaluable. He turned, sunlight catching the angles of his face. And he’ll take some of the load off your shoulders.

It will be easier to work with experienced support,I agreed, slightly relaxing. So this wasn’t about my competenceit was practical. The timeline is ambitious.

That’s why I’m giving you Hayes.Alexander returned to his desk, picking up a sleek black invitation. We’re attending the Charity Gala this evening.

I blinked. Tonight?

Problem?

Not at all, Mr. Knight.I kept my voice professional. What time should the car be ready?

You’ll leave an hour early today. I need you looking particularly elegant tonight.

I straightened my posture, mentally scanning through my wardrobe. I’ll make sure to get dressed appropriately, Mr. Knight.

I can arrange for a new outfit if you need one.

You’ve bought so many for me already,I replied, thinking of the collection of designer dresses hanging in my closet. Some still have tags on them. I’ll wear one of those.

Good. I’ll pick you up around 6:30. Wear a nice sexy bra and panties inside. Something we can remove later if we get time after the gala.

My breath caught in my throat. Even weeks after our arrangement, his directness still caught me off guard. I felt a familiar warmth spreading between my thighs.

Okay,I managed, my voice steadier than I felt.

That’ll be all for now, Ms. Harper.

I nodded and turned to leave, feeling his eyes on me as I walked to the door.

Back at my desk, I tried to focus on the Manhattan Project numbers, but my mind kept wandering to Alexander’s instructionsthe way he’d looked at me when he mentioned my underwearand what he planned to do after the gala.

I crossed my legs tighter, trying to ignore the throbbing that had started.

***

I rummaged through my closet, fingers trailing across the silks and satins Alexander had purchased. My eyes settled on an emerald green gown I hadn’t worn yet. The tag still dangled from the sleeve a designer name with too many zeroes.

Perfect for tonight.

I slipped into the shower, taking extra time to shave and moisturize. Alexander’s instructions echoed in my mind as I dried off. Something sexy underneath. Something he could remove later.

I opened my lingerie drawer and selected a black lace set that barely covered anything. The bra pushed my breasts up and together while the panties were little more than a triangle of lace held together by thin straps. Not the most comfortable for a long evening, but comfort wasn’t the point.

The gown slid over my head in a waterfall of emerald silk. It hugged my curves before flowing to the floor with a slit that climbed dangerously high on my thigh.

I grabbed my clutch and took one final look in the mirror. The woman staring back looked like she belonged in Alexander’s world. Sometimes, I barely recognized her.
