Chapter 167
Alexander
I left the conference room, my mind racing with contingency plans. The team would handle the immediate crisis response, but I needed a moment to strategize beyond the next few hours. This attack was too coordinated, too precise. Someone knew exactly where to hit us.
As I entered my office, my phone vibrated. The screen displayed a name I wasn’t surprised to see: Edward Knight.
Perfect timing, as always. I accepted the call and put it on speaker as I loosened my tie completely.
“Alexander.” His voice carried that familiar mix of authority and concern. “I just got off the phone with Harold from the board. What the hell is happening?”
“Hello to you too, Dad,” I said, dropping into my chair. “I’m handling it.”
“Handling it? The company’s losing billions in market cap over fraud allegations!”
I pinched the bridge of my nose. “I’m aware of the situation.”
“Are these allegations true?” he demanded, cutting straight to his primary concern.
“Of course not,” I snapped. “You know me better than that.”
There was a brief silence on the line. “I do,” he finally conceded. “But I also know how the market works. Perception becomes a reality unless you crush it immediately.”
Madison slipped into my office, carrying a stack of files and a fresh cup of coffee. She placed both on my desk silently, but I caught her eye and mouthed ‘thank you‘ before returning to the call.
“We’re issuing a strong statement within the hour,” I explained to my father. “There will be a board meeting at 8 AM, expediting the quarterly report release. We’re tracking down the source of these allegations.”
“Good,” he said. “What about legal action?”
“Already in motion. Dad, I appreciate the concern, but this isn’t my first crisis.”
He sighed heavily. “No, but it’s the biggest one since you’ve been in charge. The Knight name-
“Is secure,” I interrupted. “I built this company into what it is today. I’m not about to let some nameless coward with a vendetta tear it down.”
”
Madison was organizing documents at the side table, pretending not to listen but definitely hearing every word. I didn’t mind. She’d seen me at worse moments than this.

“Do you need me to come in?” my father asked. “I can be on the first flight back from Zurich.”
“No need to cut your trip short. I’ve got this under control.”
“Alexander,” his voice softened slightly, “sometimes accepting help isn’t a weakness.”
I almost laughed. “That’s rich coming from you. Weren’t you the one who told me a Knight stands alone when facing a storm?”
“I was younger and more stubborn then,” he admitted.
“Well, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Trust me on this one.”
After a moment, he relented. “Fine. But I want updates every three hours, regardless of the time
zone.”
“You’ll have them,” I promised. “Goodnight, Dad.”
“Good luck, son.”
I ended the call and leaned back in my chair, exhaling slowly. Madison approached with a tablet displaying the latest stock projections for Asian markets.
“You should head home, Madison. This is going to be an all–nighter, and you’ve already put in a full day.”
She raised an eyebrow. “With all due respect, Mr. Knight, I’m staying.”
“Madison-”
“I’m your personal assistant. Where else would I be during a company crisis?”
I studied her face, noting the determination in her eyes. “You realize this isn’t covered in your job description? Or our… arrangement?”
“I’m aware.” She straightened her posture slightly. “But I’m still staying.”
A small smile tugged at my lips. “Stubborn.”
“I learned from the best.” She turned toward the door. “I’ll get us some real food. The team ordered those sad sandwiches from the place with the questionable health rating.”
“The one with the cook who never wears gloves?”
“That’s the one.”
I shook my head. “Order from Vincenzo’s. Put it on my personal card.”

“Already did,” she called over her shoulder. “Five minutes ago.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Of course you did.”
The next few hours passed in a blur of phone calls, strategy sessions, and damage control. Madison proved invaluable, anticipating needs before I voiced them, managing the flow of information, and keeping the team focused when tensions ran high.
By 2 AM, we had made significant progress. Our statement generated positive coverage in several financial publications, the preliminary quarterly numbers looked strong enough to counter the allegations, and our legal team identified several suspicious trading patterns that suggested market manipulation.
I stepped out of a conference call with our Asian offices to find Madison organizing notes at the coffee table by my office couch. Her hair was pulled back in a messy bun, her feet were bare, and her heels were neatly placed under the table.
“The Tokyo office is fully briefed,” she said without looking up. “They’ve prepared local language statements for the morning business shows.”
