Chapter 178
Madison
I straightened my blouse as Alexander zipped up his pants, a satisfied smirk on his lips. He looked as composed as ever, not a hair out of place. How did he do that? I felt like I’d been through a hurricane.
“Ready to go shopping?” he asked casually as if we hadn’t just had mind–blowing sex against his
office window.
“Now? Can’t we go after work?” I asked, trying to tame my hair into something presentable. “I have the Miller file to finish, and—”
“The Miller file can wait.” Alexander grabbed his keys from the desk. “I want to see you in something new. Something that screams ‘project manager‘ rather than ‘assistant I occasionally bend over my desk.‘”
My cheeks burned. “Mr. Knight!”
“What? It’s just facts.” He opened his office door, instantly transforming into the professional CEO everyone else knew. “After you, Miss Harper.”
I walked past him, hyperaware of the eyes following us as we crossed the office floor. Did they know? Could they tell what we’d been doing minutes ago? I straightened my spine, trying to project
confidence.
“I’ve cleared our schedules for the afternoon,” Alexander said as we entered the elevator. “We have plenty of time to find you the perfect outfit.”
The elevator doors closed, and his professional demeanor slipped just slightly. His eyes traveled down my body, lingering on my hips.
“Your ass looks amazing in that skirt,” he murmured, keeping his hands clasped behind his back. ” Makes me want to lift it up and take you right here.‘
“There are cameras,” I reminded him, gesturing subtly to the corner of the elevator.
“I know.” His smile was wicked. “That’s what makes it exciting.”
The elevator dinged, and instantly, his expression shifted back to cool professionalism as we stepped into the lobby.
Alexander’s car waited at the curb, sleek and black like everything else he owned.
I slid into the passenger seat, inhaling the familiar scent of expensive leather and his cologne.
“John, you can take the rest of the day off,” Alexander said to his driver. “I’ll handle this myself.”

John nodded respectfully. “Yes, sir. Call if you need anything.”
After John left, Alexander turned to me with that dangerous half–smile. “Ready for your makeover, Miss Harper?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I replied, smoothing my skirt over my thighs. “Though I still think this is unnecessary.”
“Noted and ignored.” He started the engine, the powerful car purring to life. “A project manager needs to look the part.”
I watched his hands on the steering wheel, remembering how those same hands had been all over my body minutes ago. I crossed my legs tightly, trying to ignore the lingering ache between my thighs.
“Where are we going first?” I asked, desperate to think about anything else.
“Somewhere that specializes in power suits.” He navigated through Manhattan traffic with practiced ease. “You need outfits that make men nervous and women envious.”
I laughed. “Is that what my job description requires now?”
“It’s what success requires.” His eyes remained on the road, but I could see the corner of his mouth quirk upward. “First impressions matter, especially in this business.”
We pulled into the parking garage of an upscale shopping district. Alexander handed his keys to the valet with barely a glance, all business now that we were in public.
He maintained a professional distance as we walked, with no touching or lingering looks. To anyone watching, we were simply boss and employee on a business errand.
As we approached the first store, I spotted a familiar face, Dr. Peterson, standing outside, checking
his watch.
“Mr. Knight,” Dr. Peterson called, waving us over. “What a pleasant surprise.”
Alexander’s posture shifted subtly, still professional but more relaxed. “Dr. Peterson, good to see you.”
“Miss Harper,” the doctor nodded politely at me. “It’s nice to see you again.”
“You as well, Doctor,” I replied, hoping my face didn’t betray any memories of the night I’d frantically called him to Alexander’s penthouse.
“My wife’s inside browsing,” Dr. Peterson explained, gesturing toward one of the boutiques.” Women and their shopping, you know? I was banished to wait outside.”
Alexander chuckled. “Actually, we’re here shopping ourselves.”

“Oh?” Dr. Peterson raised an eyebrow. “Not your usual habitat on a workday.”
“Need some new suits,” Alexander said smoothly. “Thought I’d take advantage of a light schedule.”
I kept my expression neutral, impressed by how easily Alexander lied. Not a single hint that we were actually here for me.
“How have you been feeling?” Dr. Peterson asked, his tone shifting to professional concern. “Any more episodes?”
“None,” Alexander assured him. “I’ve been careful.”
“Still attending those business parties, I assume?”
“Can’t avoid them in my position,” Alexander replied. “But I’ve been sticking to water since the incident.”
Dr. Peterson nodded approvingly. “Smart man. Those symptoms were concerning. Have you made any progress identifying who might have drugged you?”
“Not yet,” Alexander said, his voice hardening just a fraction. “But I’m still looking into it.‘
