A Warrior's Second Chance (Faye and Alexander) novel Chapter 62

Chapter 62

FAYE

I had barely taken two steps into the quiet hallway before Alexander’s voice drifted toward mealmost casual, but with that sharp edge I knew so well.

You’ve been avoiding me, Faye. Why?He asked.

I stopped, my fingers still on the railing. I was shocked to know he actually noticed. The last time we spoke was the day Cole and I went to the northern border. I wasn’t avoiding him on purpose, I just didn’t feel like talking to him.

Every conversation with Alexander started and ended the same way everytimeand it was becoming exhausting. Not to mention that after what I heard from Bella and Irene, I didn’t see the possibility of him seeing anything in me apart from a walking red flag. He would never stop being cold to me

Ok! Maybe Bella did get into my head a little.

I wouldn’t call it avoiding,” I said, turning to face him. “More likegiving you space.

And why was he acting like he wasn’t enjoying the peace and quiet I was offering him on a platter?

He looked at me like I just called him stupid. His eyes narrowed at me. Space? Is that what you’re calling it?

Ok, now he was being dramatic, as if it had been weeks. I mean we saw at dinner yesterday, even though we didn’t talk. He was probably expecting me to try and make a conversation as

usual, but I didn’t. I couldn’t

Ok, so you thought I needed space, why?He asked, when I didn’t respond.

Yes,” I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral. You’ve had a lot going on. I didn’t think you needed me hovering around.

He stepped closer. That’s not like you. You’ve never been shy about being in my way before. You didn’t even say a word at dinner yesterday.

That part was totally to avoid Bella’s drama. I didn’t have the energy to fight over Alexander’s attention with her at the table. Especially after making it clear she owned himmaybe she did.

I folded my arms. Maybe I’ve learned a thing or two.Of course I learned a lot yesterday, but I

wasn’t going to mention any of thatI didn’t want to put Irene in an awkward situation with

her brother.

Alexander smirked lightly, so light I almost didn’t catch it. Or maybe you’ve decided I’m not worth the trouble anymore,he said.

That caught me off guard. Why did he say that? Where was that coming from?

I looked at him for a long moment, trying to read his expression. Was he being serious right now? If that’s what you think, then you’re not paying attention.

Then explain it to me,he pressed, his voice lower now. Because from where I stand, it looks like you’re not even here anymore.

I’m still here, Alpha Alexander,I said. Just notin the same way.

His gaze held mine for a beat before he tilted his head. And what way is that?

The way where my entire day bends around whatever mood you’re in…and I keep waiting for you to act like a normal mate by dutyand make me feel like I belong here.I said.

He studied me, his jaw tight. And now you think avoiding me is best?

Now I’m learning that my life can’t just be about you. We’re bounded by duty, and we will keep it that waywe don’t necessarily need to have any other kind of relationship. I think you’d agree with me,I said with a small smile.

He scoffed. That’s new.Was he finding it amusing? He obviously wasn’t taking me

seriously.

No, it’s not new,I murmured, a little fed up now. It’s just the first time I’ve said it out loud.

We stood in silence for a moment, the air between us tense.

Fayehe began, but I cut him off.

No! You’ve beendistant since the day we met, Alexander. And since I came to this house? You disappear without saying where you’re going, you come back and act like nothing happened, and then you expect me to justchase after you all the time, just so you can have the opportunity to act like I’m a pest bothering you.

His brow drew together. I’ve have things to handle, and I’m always running around, Faye. Not everything is about you.

I almost laughed at that. I know that. Believe it or not, I’m not trying to make everything about me. I justI paused, searching for the right words. I just want to know if I even

matter to the pack. If I’m someone you actually want around, or if I’m just going to remain some convenient background noise around here.

That made him look away for the first time. His hand went to the back of his neck, fingers brushing his hair. You think I don’t want you around?

I think you don’t notice whether I’m here or not,I said.

That’s not true,he replied quickly. But that’s by the way.

Of course he’d brush it off. I rolled my eyes.

What do you want now? Is there a problem?I asked. I was sure he didn’t just call me to ask why I didn’t talk to him at dinner yesterday.

ALEXANDER

I studied her, my eyes searching her face for the familiar sparkNothing. She just stood there, watching me in silence, and for the first time I felt unsettled. Something was different about hernot necessarily in a bad way, but it felt strange.

There was something strange in her eyes toosomething I couldn’t place. Not sadness, not anger. Not the fierce stubbornness she usually wore.

Is there a problem?she asked again, her voice softer this time. Do you need something?

The tone surprised me more than her words.

Still, she was looking at me expectantly, and I realized I hadn’t told her why I was even here. I want you to come with me somewhere,” I said finally.

The look on her faceit was as if I had spoken in a language she’d never heard before. Her brows knit together in disbelief, her lips parting slightly.

Excuse me?she said, blinking.

I said,” I repeated, more firmly this time, I want you to come with mejust something I want us to check out this morning.”

I knew exactly why she was shocked. We’d never gone anywhere together. Ourrelationship, if I could even call it that, had always been duty and tension, sharp words, silent battles. This

was new.

But I needed her with me this time for a reason. She played a major role, and I’d like her to

see the resultshe deserved to know and see for herself.
