Chapter 67
FAYE
We were in the car after we left the officers place. Alexander hadn’t started driving yet. He had one hand on the steering wheel, but he wasn’t looking at the road.
He wasn’t looking at me either. His eyes were fixed somewhere ahead, unfocused, as though he were still chewing on every word the officer had just laid on the table.
I leaned back against the seat, arms crossed, watching him out of the corner of my eye. His expression was rigid. The Alpha mask he wore so effortlessly, as if he was carved out of stone cracked a little. I could tell he was thinking too hard, spiraling. And I also knew he could feel my gaze on him.
He didn’t turn his head, but his voice broke the silence. “You were right.”
I blinked, caught off guard. His words hung in the air.
He finally shifted his gaze to me, and in that cold stare, I saw something I hadn’t expected- something almost close to… acknowledgment. “Everything you suspected turned out to be the case.”
My lips parted, but no immediate reply came. For a second, I let his words sink in. He wasn’t one to hand out compliments to me, not even when they were deserved.
I exhaled slowly. “I wish I wasn’t.”
That made him turn fully, his brows furrowing. “Why not?”
“Because,” I said, my voice quieter than usual, “if I’d been wrong, then the only problem we’d have to deal with would’ve been clear and straightforward…fight the northerners. End of story. But this?” I gestured vaguely with my hands, frustration bubbling up. “This is worse. We don’t even know who’s pulling the strings, who’s setting the traps. All we know is they want you to go to war, probably to weaken you enjoy for them to strike.
He studied me silently. For once, I didn’t flinch under the weight of his stare…I stared back.
Finally, he spoke again, his voice softened just slightly. “Still… you should be proud of yourself, at least. You were able to figure something out that all those security experts I have working day and night couldn’t.”
I tilted my head, caught between disbelief and suspicion. Alexander wasn’t the type to flatter. Was this his idea of encouragement? A rare attempt at praise?

I didn’t know what to do with it, so I just nodded.

He turned back to the wheel, starting the car. We pulled out of the station’s parking lot. For a few minutes, the road stretched out in silence between us, and I thought maybe that was the
end of it.
But then, out of nowhere, he asked, “Are you hungry?”
I blinked at him. “What?”
He spared me a glance before focusing on the road again. “I asked if you’re hungry.”
I stared at him like he’d grown two heads. Hungry? After everything we’d just heard, after hours of running around dealing with werewolf politics and staged attacks, his priority was my stomach?
He must have noticed my confusion, because he tapped his wristwatch lightly against the steering wheel. “It’s past lunch already. I thought we could stop somewhere in town, eat, then head back to the house.”
I squinted at him, trying to decide if this was some kind of test. “You… want to go eat?”
“Yes,” he said simply.
I shook my head, biting back a laugh. Maybe he hit his head somewhere and didn’t tell anyone. That would explain the strange behavior all day so far. First he invited me to the police station with him, then compliments, now food. What’s next, flowers?
Still, my stomach gave a low, traitorous growl, reminding me I hadn’t had more than a cup of tea for breakfast. Lunch had been swallowed by chaos.
“Fine,” I said, folding my arms and smirking. “As long as you’re paying.”
That earned me the tiniest flicker of a smile from him, it was brief but real. “Of course. I owe you a treat for helping in this case anyway. And it’s my fault you missed lunch. Maybe even my fault you skipped breakfast this morning.”
I rolled my eyes at the unnecessary explanation, but inside, something tugged uncomfortably in my chest. Maybe that was his way of reminding me this wasn’t a date. Just him being considerate, the Alpha acknowledging a partner in strategy. And that was good. I needed someone to remind me not to dive too deep into… whatever this was.
It’s just food, I told myself firmly. Nothing special.
Keep telling yourself that, Nova, my wolf, whispered slyly in the back of my mind.

I scowled internally. Don’t start.
Alexander’s voice cut through, startling me. “Is she always that sarcastic?”
I turned sharply to look at him. “Who, me?”
His lips curved into that rare smirk again, this time more deliberate. “No. Your wolf.”
My blood ran cold. I froze, staring at him in disbelief. “Wait… what?”
“You heard me,” he said, still driving as though he hadn’t just dropped a bomb.
I narrowed my eyes. “Are you reading my mind right now?”

He gave a half–shrug, maddeningly casual. “Not really. But I can hear her clearly…your wolf. Something to do with the bond.”
I gawked at him, unsure if he was serious. He didn’t sound like he was joking–but then again, he never sounded like he was joking.
“That’s not how it works,” I said flatly.
He didn’t argue. He just kept his eyes on the road, his expression was till casual, as if daring me to believe him or not.
Nova stirred, amused. I like him. He listens better than you do.
