I sat on the couch, hugging my knees loosely to my chest, staring at Alexander but not really seeing him. My mind was still stuck on the words he had just told me–words that seemed too heavy to belong to me, too strange to even make sense.
I had spent my whole life thinking I was just… ordinary. Average, even. I never saw myself as the kind of girl who stood out in a room, let alone someone who carried a secret this massive in her own body. But now, sitting here, I was supposed to believe that something had been hiding in me all along, waiting for the right moment to claw its way out.
The thought that both powers were now fighting inside me, struggling for dominance, made my stomach twist painfully. It was the scariest thing I had ever heard.
Did my parents know? Had they suspected something and just decided never to tell me? And if the gifts were meant to be split between Sage and me, why was I the one who ended up carrying both? Did that make Sage… empty? Did it mean she was cheated of something that was hers?
I couldn’t breathe for a moment as guilt crashed over me too.
Alexander hadn’t said a word since explaining, and for once, his silence didn’t comfort me. Usually, he was steady, unshakable, someone I could lean on even when he wasn’t speaking. But now? He was just watching me with that blank look.
A horrible thought crossed my mind: was he looking at me like I was some strange creature now? A mystery he didn’t know what to do with? Something dangerous to handle? I didn’t want to say the word out loud, but the idea that he might be scared of me left a bitter taste in my mouth.
The silence stretched until it became unbearable. Finally, he shifted slightly and spoke.
“Maybe your parents would have part of the answers,” he said softly, like he’d been weighing the words before releasing them.
I looked up at him, blinking. My parents. Of course. But if they knew… why didn’t they ever say anything?
Alexander leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and exhaled slowly. “At least,” he murmured, “we now know it isn’t an illness. That’s… something. A kind of relief, don’t you think?”

I didn’t answer. Relief? Maybe for him. For me, it felt like the ground had shifted under my feet, leaving me to stumble in the dark. Still, I gave him a small nod, because I didn’t have the
energy to argue.
Before I could say more, the door opened, and Helen walked in as though the air in the room wasn’t weighed down by her revelation from the night before. She was cheerful, her smile was bright. It amazed me how composed she always seemed, like nothing could rattle her.
“Alexander,” she said warmly, “let me borrow Faye for a moment.”
Her tone was so casual it almost sounded like she was asking for sugar from a neighbor, not requesting a private conversation about life–altering truths. Alexander looked at me with hesitation, but I nodded. If there were answers to be found, I needed them.
Helen gestured for me to follow, and together we walked out of the room, down the hallway, and out. She strolled slowly, and I matched her pace.
“I know,” she began gently, “you have a lot of questions. And you should. Some of them have answers… others…” she hesitated, her eyes flickering away, “others may take time to reveal
themselves.”
I bit my lip, staring at the path under my feet. At least she was honest about it. That was something.
Helen glanced at me, her expression softening. “This whole situation must feel overwhelming.”
That was too small a word, but I nodded anyway.
“I want you to remember something,” she continued, her voice kind but carrying a strange weight, “what you carry is not a curse. It is a gift. In fact, it is two gifts, and they were given to you for a reason.” She looked at me a second longer than necessary before adding, “A reason that… even I don’t fully see yet.”
“But why… why now? All my life, even up until a few days ago, I never felt anything. No signs, nothing strange. Then suddenly, everything spiraled out of control. Why so fast? Why like this?”
Helen’s eyes lingered on me, and she sighed softly, like she had expected the question. “In the supernatural, nothing happens without the right string being pulled,” she explained. ” Something triggered this, Faye. Something that is beyond us.”
I listened carefully.
She lifted her gaze to the space ahead of us. “It could be age. Sometimes when a child of

power comes of age, the gifts awaken suddenly. It could also be the mate bond–the connection between you and Alexander. That bond alone has the strength to stir what is dormant inside you the moment the bond began to grow stronger.”
My cheeks flushed, and I immediately looked away. There was nothing that serious about my bond with Alexander, how could she not see that?… And I didn’t see how it was growing stronger. It was probably just the age, and nothing else.
“And sometimes,” she added thoughtfully, “a spell can jumpstart it too.” Her eyes narrowed faintly, as if remembering something. Then she shook her head. “But that… I don’t believe is the case here.”
I glanced at her quickly. “Why do you say that?”
“Because I don’t see any dark energy hovering around you,” she said simply, but her tone left me wondering if that was the only reason.
I thought about it for a moment, then just nodded.
Helen smiled. “So we’ll go with age or the mate bond. Whichever it is, Faye, the important thing is that you are not powerless in this. It may feel like everything is happening to you, but you will learn to control it. You will not be consumed.”
Her certainty wrapped around me like a warm blanket, but the doubt in my heart wouldn’t fully let go. I wanted to believe her, I truly did. But when I remembered the fever burning through me, the uncontrollable shivers, the way my body betrayed me–I felt more like a fragile vessel being torn apart by forces I couldn’t contain.
“Why me?” I whispered, more to myself than to her.
Helen didn’t answer right away. For the first time, I noticed the faintest flash in her eyes. Finally, she reached out and brushed her fingers gently along my arm, a small gesture of comfort. “Because,” she said at last, “you were meant for this. And one day, you’ll see why.”
I stared at her, searching her face for any crack, any sign of doubt. But there was none. She believed every word she had spoken.
Helen stopped walking and turned to face me. Her expression shifted into something more contemplative, as if she had been weighing a decision in her mind.
“I have something for you,” she said quietly.
My brows furrowed, but before I could ask, she reached up and unclasped the necklace she was wearing. The chain slid gracefully into her palm, the sunlight catching on the emerald pendant at its center. At first glance, it looked simple–elegant but understated. Yet

something about it pulled at me. The way the stone glimmered, alive somehow, made it obvious this wasn’t just jewelry.
She held it out to me, her smile soft. “It belongs to you now.”
I hesitated, staring at the piece of jewelry in her hand. My throat went dry. This wasn’t just a necklace…her tone told me enough.
After a moment, I accepted it. The chain felt cool against my skin as I slipped it around my neck, and as the emerald rested against my collarbone, a strange calmness spread through me. Like the world had been wobbling beneath my feet all this while, and suddenly it
steadied.
Helen watched me closely. “It will help keep you stable,” she explained, “while your gifts try to find balance.”
For the first time since last night, I managed a real smile. The weight of the necklace wasn’t heavy, yet somehow it felt grounding. “So, “no more dramatic entrances for them?”
Her laughter rang out, soft and genuine. “I like your sense of humor,” she said warmly. “You’re right, my dear.”
But then, just as quickly, her face sobered. Her eyes darkened, and she looked at me with a seriousness that made me stand straighter.
“A storm is coming,” she said suddenly. Her voice was calm, but her words carried the weight of thunder. “One that will threaten to swallow Alexander up.”
