A Warrior's Second Chance (Faye and Alexander) novel Chapter 95

Chapter 95

FAYE

I stood outside Alexander’s room door for what felt like an eternity, rehearsing the words in my head. It was ridiculous that I had to practice something so ordinary…asking to get a jobbut with Alexander, nothing was ever as simple as it should be.

Still, this mattered to me. More than I wanted to admit, even to myself.

I raised my hand to knock, let it fall back down, then raised it again. Finally, I knocked before I could talk myself out of it.

The door opened, and there he was, standingwearing some casual outfit like he didn’t plan to go to work today. Faye, do you need something?he asked.

I want to talk to you about something,” I said quickly before I lost my nerve.

He gave a small nod and stepped aside to let me in. I walked in, trying to calm the nervous flutter in my stomach, while he shut the door and followed. He moved past me, settling onto the couch. I stayed standing, unsure if I should sit.

When he looked up at me, one eyebrow lifted. “You’re really going to stand there like a guest in a room you’ve slept in, eaten in, and even dressed in?

Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I realized how silly it was that I hadn’t sat down already. I laughed awkwardly and rubbed the back of my neck. I have a feeling you wouldn’t let me

hear the end of that.”

A rare ghost of amusement flickered across his face. You’re right about that.

I sat down finally, smoothing my hands over my lap. He didn’t press me with questions, just watched, which was somehow worse.

So I decided to go straight to the point. I wanted to let you knowI want to get a job. Outside the pack.

For the first time in a while, I caught him off guard. His brows drew together. A job?

Yes.” I straightened a little, bracing myself for whatever lecture was about to follow.

His next words, though, almost made me laugh out of disbelief. Why?

Why?I repeated, giving him a look. What do you mean, why? Isn’t it normal for an adult to want to work?

He leaned forward, forearms resting on his thighs, his eyes locked on mine with that same unyielding seriousness he always carried. It’s not like that. You don’t need to work. I’m providing everything you need. If there’s something you want that you don’t have, you only need to tell me. Sodid something happen? Something I don’t know about?

The sincerity in his expression caught me off guard. He wasn’t being condescendinghe genuinely thought my decision meant something was wrong.

I shook my head. No, nothing happened. Honestly, I’ve always thought about getting a job since I moved here. I justneeded to adjust first. Balance things out. The Luna responsibilities, this whole new environment. Now I finally feel like I can handle adding more. PlusI paused touching the necklace on my neckthe one I got from his mother, I need some kind of distraction, something that’ll keep my mind off things.

He was silent for a moment, just staring at me. Then he said simply, That’s fine.”

I blinked at him, caught off guardagain. That’s it? That’sfine?

He nodded once.

I smiled, surprised at how easy it had been. I had prepared myself for an argument, a long battle of words, maybe even his outright refusal. Alexander could be unnecessarily overprotective whenever it came to me stepping outside the pack’s territory. But maybe I had

underestimated him.

That thought lasted all of two seconds before he spoke again.

You could come work for me.

I turned my head sharply, not sure I’d heard him correctly. What?

My company in town,he said casually. If you want a job, I’ll give you one there. I’ll employ you myself, pay you well.

For a moment, I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or be offended. The whole point was to be independent, to carve out an identity beyond being Luna of Blood Crescentor Alexander’s mate. And his brilliant solution was for me to still go work under his shadow, in his

company.

You can’t be serious,I muttered.

He frowned slightly, as if he truly didn’t understand the problem. Why not? You want a job. I can give you one. You’d be safe, I’d know you’re taken care of.

Because that’s not the point, Alexander.” I leaned back against the couch, shaking my head. I don’t want to be handed a position because of who I am to you. I don’t want to be

employee. I want something that’s mineseparate from you. Do you understand that?

His eyes held mine for a long moment. Then he said, You don’t need my permission to do

that.

No,I agreed, I don’t. That’s not why I’m telling you this. I’m telling you out of respect for your authority. You’re Alpha. I wouldn’t just disappear and take a job without letting you know.

Something in his expression softened at that, but only briefly. His face returned to its usual expression. Fine. Do you have somewhere in mind?

Not yet,” I admitted. I’m still figuring that part out.

He leaned back, folding his arms. Then when you decide, let me know.

I narrowed my eyes at him, suspicion immediately rising. Why? So you can use your influence to make sure they hire me? Or so you can have the place monitored before I even start working there?

He didn’t answer. He didn’t have to. The silence told me I was right on both counts.

I let out a short laugh and shook my head. Exactly what I thought.

He exhaled slowly, as though letting the matter go. Fine. Do what you want. Anything else?

I hesitated, then shook my head. No.
