Chapter 145

Lola

Something tugged.

Not sharp, not searingjust steady, insistent. A pull at her skin.

Her lashes fluttered. The world came in fragments: muffled beeping, the hiss of air, the faint sting of antiseptic, A voice hummed low, clinical, as fingers checked lines in her arm, tape pulling against skin, the sting of an IV.

When her eyes cracked open, the light was blinding. The nurse froze, eyes widening. You’re awake.

Her throat scraped dry. She tried to swallow, but it felt like glass. The nurse hurried a cup of water against her lips, tilting just enough. Cool relief slid down her throat, though every muscle trembled with the effort of lifting her head.

The nurse’s voice shook with disbelief. God. After everythingyou shouldn’t even-She cut herself off, fumbling with the chart.

Moments later, a doctor swept in, penlight flashing in her eyes, rapid questions tumbling out. Do you know your name? The date? Where you are?

Lola rasped answers, each one costing more energy than she had. Her skull throbbed with every syllable. The doctor’s eyebrows climbed higher with every response. Remarkable,he muttered, already cycling through motor tests, checking reflexes, pulling lightly at her stitched side.

Remarkable my ass,Lola croaked. Every nerve screamed like she’d been beaten with steel bats, her ribs ached, and her skin burned. I feel like I got steamrolled by the gatekeeper of hell and returned with postage due.

The nurse choked on a laugh. The doctor didn’t.

The door slammed open.

A figure filled the framechest heaving, shirt bloodstained, eyes black and burning.

Enzo.

He didn’t move at first. Just stared, like if he blinked she might vanish. Like he was memorizing every inch of her just to prove she was

real.

Her cracked lips twitched. “Guess hell doesn’t want me either. Honestly? Offended.

The doctor stepped forward, palms raised. Sir, you can’t-

Enzo didn’t hear. Didn’t care. He crossed the room in three long strides, brushing past nurses, ignoring the hands that tried to block him.

He cupped her face, thumbs trembling against her jaw, eyes dragging over every bruise, every line of pain carved into her. She felt the quake of himfury and relief battling in his grip.

You came, she whispered. And because it was him, because it had always been him, she added hoarsely, Took you long enough.

Chapter 145

His mouth crushed to hers. Desperate. Shaking. Relief and ruin all at once.

And thenhis weight gave.

Enzo collapsed forward, heavy and sudden, nearly crushing her. Hands caught him, nurses shouting, the doctor barking orders. They pulled him off the bed, lowering him to the floor, voices blurring in panic.

Lola’s chest heaved, eyes wet, her fingers still twisted in his shirt. Enzo, she rasped, throat breaking on the word.

His head had fallen to the crook of her arm, unconscious, the storm finally dragging him under.

Her head snapped sideways, every nerve screaming in protest. Enzo-The word scraped her raw throat. She tried to push up, but the bandages bit and her ribs lit like fire. She slumped back, gasping, and clawed for leverage against the bedrail.

The nurse was already kneeling, calling for a gurney. The doctor burst in seconds later, barking orders. Trauma three, now. Get him prepped-

No.Her voice cracked, but the steel behind it didn’t. Not there. Here. He stays here.

The doctor barely glanced at her, motioning for orderlies. He needs proper evaluation—

If you move him, I’ll rip these out.Her fingers closed around the IV line in her arm, nails digging until the tape peeled. Do you hear me? He stays.

Miss, you’re in no condition-

The hallway erupted with heavy boots. The door slammed back, metal rattling.

Dom was first through, shoulders heaving, eyes wild. Gino right behind him, sharp gaze slicing over everything until it landed on Enzo sprawled on the tile.

Help me,Lola rasped, arm stretching, IV tugging taut. Don’t let them take him.

Dom didn’t hesitate. He dropped to his knees, sliding his arms under Enzo’s shoulders. Gino caught his legs, and together they hauled him up, the effort rough but sure.

Where?Dom barked.

Here,Lola croaked, pointing at the bed jammed against the wall with her monitors. Next to me. Now.

The doctor started again, voice tight. We can’t treat them both in one-

Gino turned on him, calm as still water. He pulled an envelope from his jacket and pressed it into the man’s hand with a look that froze the protest on his lips. You’ll make it work,he said softly, almost politely. Right here. Together.

The doctor hesitated. Then his shoulders dropped, his nod curt. Fine. Get another bed. Now.
