Accidentally Yours

“Because you’re good,” she said.

“Because I’m careful.” He stood and reached for the cotton shirt he’d fald nut–his, of course, soft from wear. He held it open. She slid her arms in and he drew it down over her like a curtain, hands pausing at her shoulders, then her throat. He didn’t button the top. He didn’t have to. The way he touched her was closure enough.
Nico tugged a fresh towel over her hair and rubbed gently, like she might bruise there too. When he twisted the ends up into a messy knot, he kissed the crown of her head as if he couldn’t help himself. Maybe he couldn’t.
“Okay,” she breathed. “Consensus: I am not porcelain.”
“Disagree,” Nico said, immediate.
Enzo’s mouth twitched. “You’re tempered glass. Looks like brittle. Isn’t.”
She grinned at that one. “Put it on a mug.”
“Later,” Enzo said dryly. “Add it to our list of poor decisions.”
“Oh yeah?” She slid her palm to his sternum, the cotton of his shirt damp and clinging. “Where would you rank this morning?*
He tipped his head, considering. “Top three.”
Nico snorted. “Top one.”
“Bias,” Enzo said.
“Correct,” Nico said, and kissed the
corner of her mouth again like the gravity was too strong.
I could drown in this, I could also die of it.
Enzo caught Nico’s wrist before it wandered higher. Not rough. Just–there. A pressure that said, enough for now, Nico froze, jaw flexing. that lovesick feral thing flaring bright. Then he breathed it out and nodded.
“Hey,” she said softly, catching Nico’s face with her palm so he’d look at her and not the floor. “I’m here.”

“It’s… new.”
Enzo’s glance flicked between them, reading every line of hunger and restraint like a ledger. He stepped in, bracketed them both with his body, and pressed his thumb under her chin until she met his eyes.
“This s

She nodded, Nico, too. The agreement landed like a seal pressed in hot war.
“I don’t want to lie,” she said.
“You don’t have to,” Enzo answered. “You say nothing. That’s different.“
“And if someone guesses?” Nico asked. He was already coiling around the problem, looking for angles.
“Then they guess,” Enzo said. “And keep their teeth.”
Lola huffed a laugh that hurt a little and felt good anyway. “You two are terrible at subtle.”
“Untrue,” Enzo said, completely solemn. “I am elegant.”
“Uh–huh.” She poked his chest.
“And Nico?”
“Bell that won’t stop ringing.” Enzo said, and Nico’s ears actually went pink.

Nico muttered.

The room went quiet in that way it did when truth slid in and found a chair. She swallowed around the sudden thickness in her throat, then rolled her shoulders like she could shake it off and not cry on both of them again. “Okay,” she said briskly, even if her voice wobbled. “Secrecy pact enacted. New… whatever this is stays off the minutes.”
Potter “For now.”
“Off the minutes, Nico echoed, softer.
Enzo squeezed the back of his neck–brief, grounding–and then stepped away, shifting back into motion. “We have ten minutes before the table. Drink water.” He handed her a bottle. “Two pills.” He tipped two painkillers into her palm, “Small sips.”
“Yes, Sir.”
His look said try me. She grinned and obeyed. Nico watched her like he’d memorize the way she swallowed. When she caught him staring. he didn’t even pretend otherwise.
“What?” she asked.
“You’re breathing,” he said.
“Oh.” She blinked. “Good. We like that.”
“We do,” Enzo agreed.
Nico’s mouth twitched. The wild in him didn’t go away; it just settled, like a wolf told to heel and choosing–for the moment–to listen. When she pushed to stand, both of them reached on instinct. She took both hands. Let them lift her. Let them have the small victory of carrying a piece of her weight.
At the doorway, she hesitated. “Ground rules,” she said.

Enzo didn’t blink “Dome.”
Nico nodded. “Done”

The silence stretched, not because they were considering it, but because the vow had to be given the dignity of a beat. Enxo bent his head until his forehead touched hers, the gesture intimate and in–clad. “Always,” he said.
Nico squeezed her hand. “Always.”
The new shape of them settled on her shoulders–not light, not heavy, just exact. She drew a slow breath, felt it move without tearing. and smiled. “Okay,” she said, and meant let’s go to war.
They walked out together.
