Chapter 209

Enzo

He’d been watching her from across the room not the way the others did, full of pity and distancebut with a quiet ache that lived somewhere under his ribs. The second she turned, the noise of the room went flat.

Black dress, black roses, that steady storm in her eyes she looked untouchable and breakable all at once. He didn’t even realize he was moving until she was standing in front of him, breath still uneven from whatever she’d whispered to the marble.

He reached into his jacket pocket, fingers brushing the small weight there, I wanted to give you something,he said, voice low.

Lola frowned softly. Here?”

He nodded. Here.

When he brought it out, the silver caught the lightslim and simple, a delicate lock shaped to match the pendant at her throat. A twin to it, cool against his palm.

Her breath hitched. Enzo

It’s got a piece of him,he said quietly. A trace of Nico’s ashes sealed in the lock.

She stared, wordless.

He looked toward the urn, then back at her. The key’s with him. Sealed inside.

For a heartbeat, they just stood there in the quiet. Then he huffed a small, uneven laugh. I can almost hear him, you know? That smug voice. How are you gonna live knowing I’m always with her?

It broke something in herthe grief cracked and let out a shaky laugh she didn’t mean to give.

Enzo smiled, soft and tired, thumb brushing along her wrist as he fastened the clasp. He’d want to be with you. This justmakes sure he

is.

Lola looked down at the bracelet, the little lock gleaming against her skin, and a shaky laugh slipped out. Guess that makes him the forever third wheel, she murmured. Her lips curved, faint but real. He’d love that. And bitch about it endlessly.

Enzo’s mouth twitched, the corner caught between grief and a smile. Yeah,he said quietly. He really would.

Her eyes were wet but bright, It’s perfect.

He shook his head gently. You’re perfect,he said, almost under his breath.

Lola pressed her lips together, swallowing the sound that tried to rise. Enzo reached out, tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. He’d tell you to stop crying before you make him look bad,he murmured.

That earned him another small laugh, soft but real.

C’mon,he said, letting his hand rest at the small of her back, grounding her. Let’s get you out of here before we both end up drunk enough to start fights with ghosts.

She let out a shaky exhale, nodding. And as he guided her toward the edge of the room, his thumb traced slow circles against her spine- steady, patient, a silent I’m here threaded between every touch.

Behind them, the urn gleamed in the low light. Between the ashes in the silver and the pulse under Enzo’s hand, Nico’s presence lingered –warm, mischievous, still part of them both.

They’d stayed as long as they could. Long enough for condolences to turn rehearsed, for grief to start looping back on itself. The marble urn at the center of the room caught every shimmer of light like it wanted to blind them with loss.

Enzo’s mother found him before they lefther perfume, her trembling hands, her composure stretched thin. You’re already going?she asked softly.

He nodded once. We’ve stayed as long as we can, mamma. There’s too much waiting back home.

She sighed, a sound full of pride and worry. You live your life like the house is always on fire. Her hand came up, brushed his jaw like she was memorizing it. But go. Do what needs doing. Justcome back in one piece.

I always do,he said.

She looked over his shoulder to Lola. You take care of him, cara mia [my dear]. He listens to no one else.

Lola’s smile was soft, tired. I’ll do what I can.

They said their final goodbyes and stepped out into the corridor where early evening sunlight spilled thin through the high glass windows. The plane waited on the private strip outside. Gino and Dom led the way ahead.

For a moment, Enzo thought maybe, just maybe, the day could end quietly. Then he noticed the flowers in Lola’s hand.

Black roses. Unmistakable and wrong.

Where’d you get those? His voice came out lower than he meant, already coiled tight.

Lola hesitated, the brief kind that said she was deciding whether or not to lie. Then: They were at the urn.

He stopped walking. At the urn?

She nodded once. Someone left them.

Enzo stared, pulse gone silent in his throat. And?

There was a note.

He didn’t breathe. What did it say?

Lola met his eyes. Black suits you, Pet.

The words hit like a knife slipped between ribsquiet, deep, designed to twist. His jaw flexed. The air between them thinned.

At Nico’s memorial? These bastards just wrote their own eulogy.

He fought the urge to put a hole through the wall. Not here. Not in front of Nico’s family. Not in front of her.
