Just then, my phone started buzzing–it was only vibrating.

First he hugged me tight, then pushed me away just as quickly–I was left standing there, totally dazed.

His chest was still heaving as he looked at me, and for a second, he seemed at a loss himself. Then he just turned and walked toward the elevator, like he couldn’t stand to be around me right now.

“Mr. Jennings…” I called out, taking a couple steps after him. “Did you come up here because you were worried about

me?”

“No!” Edward’s tone went cold. “I was just bored, that’s all.”

Hearing his obvious excuse, I burst out laughing. “Sorry, I’ll make sure my phone isn’t on silent next time.”

“There won’t be a next time. I’m not coming for you again,” Edward shot back. He really seemed pissed, like I’d just

messed with him.

A sudden rush of anxiety washed over me. The elevator was still stuck on the first floor–it hadn’t even started coming up

yet.

The hallway was eerily quiet, so silent I could almost make out the sound of his low, steady breathing.
