‘Rory‘
How the hell did he find out?
The question looped in my mind over and over again as we drove back to Emerald Pack in Mona’s car.
Well–Xander was driving, of course.
The three of us–Mona, Dhara, and I–sat in the back seat with our hands in our laps, looking like children who had just been caught sneaking out past curfew. The silence in the car was thick, punctuated only by Mona’s restless fidgeting and Dhara’s occasional sighs.
For the first time ever, I saw Mona showing submission to Xander. Normally, she had no problem calling him an ass–just not to his face–for the way he treated me, and swore up and down that he would never earn her respect.
But tonight?
Tonight, with the anger radiating off him like heat from a wildfire, it was clear that even her wolf knew who was boss.
The car ride felt like it lasted forever, but eventually, we pulled up to Xander’s private house–the very place where I had spent my non–existent honeymoon.
He threw the car in park and got out without a word, slamming the door behind him. Mona winced.
He stalked toward the front door, opening it wide before turning to the two girls beside me.
“Pick any room,” he all but snapped in their direction. “Stay the night and then back to the academy in the morning. Got it?”
Mona nodded and Dhara simply hummed.
I made an attempt to leave with them, but Xander’s fingers wrapped around my wrist, holding me in place.
“Not. You,” he gritted out.
Mona shot me a worried glance, but I forced a small, reassuring smile before she and Dhara disappeared inside.
Now, I was alone with him.
And he was pissed.
Xander’s glare pinned me in place the second the front door shut. I had seen him angry before. Hell, the very first time I officially met him, he was pissed. But this… this was something else entirely.
I shifted comfortably under his heated gaze, needing him to say something–anything, really.
His eyes raked over my body, lingering on the swell of any breasts in the black dress, and his jaw ticked sharply, like it physically pained him to look at

“What the hell were you doing out there alone after midnight, Rory?” His voice was low, controlled, but barely.
“I wasn’t alone,” I crossed my arms. To him, it probably looked like an act of defiance. But it was my way of shielding myself from the coldness of his
anger.
Xander let out a sharp, humortess laugh “Matt wasn’t with you. I wasn’t with you. So, yes, you were alone.”
I couldn’t help it. I rolled my eyes. “I am perfectly-”

“No,” he cut me off, voice booming through the area of the porch. “You are not perfectly capable of taking care of yourself, because you don’t have a wolf!”
I huffed, my chest rising and falling with frustration. “I know I don’t have a damn wolf! But I wasn’t defenseless! Mona and Dhara were there, and-”
“And wouldn’t be able to properly protect you should an attack happen!” he snapped, stepping closer. “None of them are Alpha–blooded–they’d be too busy protecting themselves.”
“Dhara is Alpha–blooded,” I threw back.
Xander’s brows furrowed, then he glared.
“She is! She just doesn’t tell anyone.”
We had to squeeze it out of her.
Xander pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling sharply.
“That’s not the point, Aurora. And you know it.” His eyes flickered with anger and something else I couldn’t place. “You know someone wants you dead. Maybe more than one person. And you don’t know who, or what they have planned. If you wanted to go home, fine–you’re not prohibited. But in the damn woods, Rory? Near the damn border?”
His chest rose and fell, his hands clenched into fists.
“Do you forget what happened a week ago?” he asked a little lower this time.
I should have thought of the danger. I should have remembered the rogues, because I knew that’s what he meant.
But instead… Instead, I remembered being wrapped in his arms.
I remembered him hunting for me, the worry in his eyes when I was getting weak. I remembered the heated moment when I had been cleaning his wound, my hands against his bare skin, his eyes dark and unreadable.
I remembered it all.
“Where has your mind gone to?” Xander’s sharp glare cut through me, dragging me back to the present.
I blinked rapidly, heat flashing through my cheeks.
“Yes,” I said quickly, forcing my voice steady. “I remember the rogues.”
Xander’s eyes narrowed.
“Rogues who took a keen interest in you,” he growled. “You, Auroral”
“I know!” I snapped.
“So why did you put your life in danger by going out there so late?!”
“Because i want to find out who killed Eden, okay?!” The words left me before I could stop them.
Xander froze.
His eyebrows shot up, and his mouth parted slightly as he blinked at me, clearly stunned
I felt the burning sting of tears again, but I refused to let them fall.
I wasn’t going to break down in front of him.
