Chapter 36

*Rory*

I couldn’t sleep.

The dorm felt too tight. Too foreign. Too exposed.

The small bed beneath me creaked every time I shifted, and I’d already twisted in the thin sheets more times than I could count. Dhara had fallen asleep earlyher breaths even, her face peaceful in the sliver of moonlight that cut across the room. She looked so calm. Like the world hadn’t tried to hunt her down so many times in one semester.

She gave me an extra blanket, a spare pillow, and didn’t press for details.

For that, I was grateful.

Her temporary roommate, the thirdyear guy I still hadn’t warmed to, lay across from us with his headphones in, his face turned toward the wall. He hadn’t spoken to us once since I came in. If he noticed how tense I was -how I kept checking the door every ten minuteshe didn’t care.

But I couldn’t rest.

Not after the fight with Xander.

Not after the pain I felt when I realized he wasn’t going to give in and tell me the truth. Not after I realized he didn’t want to mark me because he wanted me, but because he wanted to protectme.

I hadn’t told Dhara about it. I didn’t want to burden her. And I sure as hell didn’t trust the thirdyear who spent half his time glaring at Dhara like she’d personally flooded his locker.

I stuffed the pillow over my head and rolled onto my back.

Still no sleep.

The air was still. The kind of still that felt wrong.

I shifted again, letting out a soft breath. And that’s when it started.

That tingle down my spine.

The prickling under my skin.

I sat up slowly, every nerve firing at once. It was then that I realized I’d been shifting for hours and now Dhara’s roommate was asleep too. It was almost two in the morning. The hairs on my arms stood, my heart beginning to pound,

Something was wrong.

I could feel it.

And then I heard itthe quiet click of the door. Soft. Subtle. Not loud enough to wake a normal sleeper.

But I wasn’t sleeping.

I froze, breath locked in my throat.

My eyes darted toward the doorway, and there it was. A silhouette. Someone in a dark hoodie, their face masked by the shadows, creeping across the room.

Dhara didn’t stir.

Neither did the roommate.

I stayed completely still, watching as the figure moved toward my bed.

They didn’t hesitate.

Didn’t check if anyone else was watching.

They were here for me.

My fingers inched toward my phone, but the moment I moved, they reacted. Their hand reached into their jacket, and something glinted in the moonlight.

A syringe.

Cold terror spiked through me. My mouth opened, but nothing came out. I could feel my fear spiking to a level that was enough to cause a shift if my wolf was active.

The person lunged.

I screamed, kicking the nightstand. The lamp crashed to the floor with a deafening shatter.

Dhara shot up in bed, gasping. Rory?!

But I was already being slammed back into the mattress. A heavy weight pinned me down. I thrashed, bucking hard, but the needle jabbed into my shoulder with brutal precision.

Don’t!I shrieked.

But the plunger was already pressed.

The liquid burned.

Hot. Acidic. Wrong.

My limbs started to go numb as a dizzying fog rolled over me.

Dhararun!I gasped, my voice barely working.

The thirdyear had jumped out of bed by now. I saw him grab somethinghis phone, maybe? I didn’t know.

My vision was swimming.

Dhara screamed.

Zerina growled.

The force of it vibrated in my skull, boiling up from deep inside me.

And then the door burst open, and Xander rushed in. I didn’t guess twice how he knew I was in trouble. He must’ve felt it through our bond when my fear spiked. I knew it would have alerted him.

He didn’t even pause. His body launched across the room like a missile, slamming into the intruder, dragging them off me and hurling them into the dresser with a crack that shook the walls.

The thirdyear was already calling someone, panic thick in his voice.

Matt barreled in right behind Xander, eyes scanning the chaos. He didn’t hesitatehe was at my side in seconds, grabbing me as I convulsed on the bed.

Rory! His voice was ragged. Rory, stay with me!

I couldn’t focus.

My skin was burning. My bones pulsed. The edges of my vision went white.

MattI whimpered, feeling herrising.

Zerina.

She wasn’t trying to break free.

She already had.

But something told me it was different this time. She wasn’t trying to control me or kill me. She was trying to save meto fight against whatever was injected into our system.

Xander had the intruder pinned. Who sent you?!he growled, fangs out.

But the figure only spat at him and twisted. They smashed something from their pocketa small black orb. Smoke exploded outward in a blast of choking haze,

Xander recoiled just long enough for the intruder to slip free and dive out the window.

The thirdyear male ran to the door, swearing. They’re gone!

Xander didn’t chase him. Instead, he turned toward me.

And what he saw made his face go pale.

The syringe still protruded from my shoulder, the contents fully injected.

Z3,he muttered, yanking the needle free and inspecting the vial. Son of a bitch. This wasn’t supposed to be accessible. Who the fuck has access to Z3?!

Matt’s hands gripped me tighter. She’s not breathing right. Her heart’s spiking.

My body bucked violently. Vomit hit the floor. I barely registered it through the haze of pain.

She needs the suppressant now!Matt shouted.

No….I cried out. Not again. Don’t sedate her. I can feel hershe’s not trying to hurt anyone. She just wants to save me.

She’ll kill you, Rory!Xander barked, pulling out the emergency kit from the side of his boot. His hands were slick with sweat as he cracked open the suppressant vial.

She’s scared!I sobbed. She’s scared and angry and hurtingdon’t take her away again, please!
