Chapter 5

*Rory*

The knock on my dorm room door came earlier than expected.

I had barely managed to get dressed, my body still feeling sluggish from yesterday’s events. The effects of recovering from withdrawal and ending up in the infirmary on my first day at the academy were still lingering in my system, dulling my senses, but not enough to stop me from scowling at the sound.

I opened the door to find Matt standing there with a wide, easygoing grin. His brown hair was tousled like he had just rolled out of bed, and his hazel eyes sparkled with something unreadable.

“Morning, Mrs. Grayson.”

I groaned. “Don’t call me that.”

He smirked. “What? Not a fan of the title?”

I rolled my eyes but stepped aside to let him in. Thankfully, Mona had left early to go on her morning run. She and her wolf did that every day, and I tried not to feel jealous or upset when she told me.

I missed Zerina. Even though I knew her for only five minutes. I wished I could let her out like Mona and every other wolf.

“What do you want, Matt?” I asked as he made his way into our dorm. Mona and I were lucky to be one of the few persons who didn’t have to share our dorm with a third roommate, although the rooms were far too big for even four persons, anyway. No doubt his room was far bigger. Still, he seemed to fit just right in as he plopped himself into my bed.

“Well,” he said, “since you’re my Luna—”

“I’m not.”

“—and my best friend’s wife,” he continued like I hadn’t spoken, “it’s only right that I escort you to class.”

I gave him a look. “Why do I feel like you have ulterior motives?”

Matt grinned and held up his hands. “Guilty. But hear me out—it’s for your own good.”

I narrowed my eyes. “For my own good?”

He sighed dramatically. “Your father asked me to make sure you take your medicine every day.”

My entire body went rigid. “What?”

Matt’s grin faded slightly as he took in my reaction. “Look, Rory, I get that you’re mad. But it’s not like I had much of a choice. He was very… insistent.”

I felt heat rise in my chest, my fingers curling into fists. “So you’re my assigned babysitter now?”

“I prefer ‘responsible caretaker.’”

I scoffed. “You mean ‘prison guard.’”

Matt sighed, getting up and stepping closer. “Look, I know you don’t want this. But I was there when you collapsed, Rory. You scared the hell out of everyone. And Xander…” He hesitated before shaking his head. “He didn’t exactly rush to help you. So if he’s not going to make sure you’re okay, then I will.”

I crossed my arms. “Oh, so you’re just doing this for the sake of the alliance?”

Matt’s playful expression vanished in an instant. He reached out, his hand wrapping around mine, stopping me in my tracks. When I looked down, his hazel eyes were serious, intense in a way I wasn’t used to seeing from him even though I’d only known him for two days.

“No,” he said, his voice firm. “Because I care about you.”

My breath hitched. I stared at him, caught off guard by the sincerity in his tone, by the way he was looking at me like I was something—someone—worth protecting. I didn’t know how to respond, so I just nodded.
