Amber’s POV

Some time passed before the other Healers and me were able to identify what was causing Julian’s mother’s condition to crash, but when we finally did, it was a relief to hear the sirens and whistles stop.

For now, she was out of the woods, at least as much as she had been before this medical episode began.

Some of the Healers patted me on the back. Most of them I had known closely from my time working with the pack as Healer Amanda, and those ones seemed grateful and eager for my help.

The newer faces among them seemed less eager to accept my help. In fact, one of them even stepped forward. After giving me a thorough, disapproving once over, he looked to his supervisor.

We didn’t need the help,he said. Especially from some random outsider. Who even invited this

woman?

This is Healer Amber, formerly Healer Amanda, the supervisor told him firmly. She is a world renowned healer and worthy of your respect.

It’s fine,I started to say, but one of the other healers I knew interrupted me to say, It isn’t.

That Healer gestured to me while speaking to his young colleague. This woman has saved many lives, and you would do well to remember that. We’ve been getting nowhere fast with this case. To have her on

our side is a benefit, not a hardship.

While I was grateful for their quick defense of me, it was the other things he had said that caught my

attention. You’ve been having trouble here?

Yes,the supervisor said. He glanced at the young man once more. In fact, our patient would have been dead without your timely appearance, Healer Amber.

The younger Healer’s face burned with obvious rage. Without saying another word, he stormed out of the

room.

I’m sorry about him,the supervisor said to me, after the young man had gone.

I waved off the concern. It’s fine.” I had been dealing with men like that for my entire career. Even with my reputation as it was now, I was still constantly being underestimated. It all washed off of me now, like water over a river stone. All of my hard edges had already been eroded away.

Instead of concerning myself with these trivialities, I was more interested in what was going on with the patient here, and what I could do to help her. I had taken a vow to help every patient, but I wasn’t just

doing this for her.

This patient was Julian’s mother, and that gave her special priority with me, because Julian was so

important to me.

Please, tell me what is going on here,I said.

The supervisor sighed as some of the other healersfaces took on a defeated look.

It’s likely old age,the supervisor said. But she is deteriorating so fast, faster than most, that we suspect there is something else going on. The trouble is, we are having a hell of a time trying to locate what could

be wrong.

Something in her mind, perhaps, one of the other Healers said. She’s confused sometimes.

But if she’s unwell in other areas, that could affect her mind too, said another Healer.

It was clear they were all just guessing now. That likely meant that the usual testing hadn’t shown any definitive results, causing everyone to grasp at straws. As their frustration grew, so too did their desperation.

What they needed was a fresh pair of eyes, and I had those. After being chased out of Rafael’s pack before my work could be completed there, I was eager to help someone. That this someone was also Julian’s mother made everything more important.

Will you stay for a while, Healer Amber?the supervisor asked. Will you help us?

As I meant to be here for Julian anyway, it wasn’t any great hardship to tell him, Yes. I’ll stay.Looking at the other Healers, I hoped to lift their spirits as I told them, We will solve this together.

Julian’s POV

In the waiting room, Aunt Kathy was the one holding Alice’s hand now. A lot of my family was sitting down again, and Aunt Kathy was taking Alice to each of them, one at a time, to introduce them properly. She even produced little facts about each that she thought might be of interest to Alice.

My cousin Blake blushed down to his roots when Aunt Kathy told Alice, Your cousin Blake loved his unicorn plush when he was your age. I swear he took that doll everywhere.

Mom,Blake said.

Aunt Kathy ignored his pleas. What was his name again, Blake? The unicorn?

Begrudgingly, his face turned down, Blake said, Lord Sparkleton.

Ah, that was it,Aunt Kathy said, and Alice giggled.

I like that name,” she told Blake, who at once seemed less embarrassed and more pleased.

Down the hallway, the sirens stopped wailing in Mom’s room. Most of the Healers stayed within the room

for a few minutes, with only a handful leaving one of which seemed annoyed.

Only when I saw Amber emerge from the room did I stand and move to greet her.

She’s stable now,Amber said.

Behind me, some of my family exhaled heavy breaths. This was good news to all of us.

While I was sure I hadn’t done wrong in correcting Mom’s confusion about Olivia and Amber, I had felt a massive amount of guilt for it having hurt Mom. To know she was at least stable now came as a deep

relief.

Thank you, Amber,I said, because I suspected none of the rest of my family would. In fact, while they

had all warmed up to Alice, most of them were still glaring at Amber.

Amber nodded. I’m going to stay a few days to keep working the Healers assigned to her. They are

surprised by the rapid pace of her decline. She’s aging but things should not be deteriorating this quickly,

naturally. I’ve offered to help with the testing.

That’s wonderful, thank you,I said again.

I had firsthand knowledge of Amber’s professionalism and talent as a Healer. I knew there was no one

more qualified to help Mom.

My family, however, did not seem to agree. Tony, in particular, seemed the most aggrieved. He started forward. In his haste, he shoved Alice to the side. Aunt Kathy caught her before she could fall, but Alice glared at Tony.

I did too, not liking the way he pushed my daughter.

She’s biased, and I want a real doctor,Tony said. She must know your mother hates her. She’ll probably sabotage her entire care.

I would never,Amber said. A patient doesn’t need to like me for me to treat them.

I bet they do, because you are a vicious, jealous bitch, and everyone knows it,Tony said, waving to his family.

Watch your mouth,I said, stepping forward.

At the same time, Aunt Kathy scolded, Tony!

Amber touched my arm, holding me back. Maybe she didn’t think this was as big a deal as I did. No one talked about my wife like that.

But Aliceshe was the angriest.

Don’t talk about my Mommy like that!

In a split second, her eyes flashed red and she tore forward from Aunt Kathy’s hands.

Alice curled her fingers, which became claws, and she tore into Tony’s arm, shredding his shirt and

making him bleed.
