Chapter 253
Amber’s POV
Maybe I should have called Julian, or security, or any of the other numerous people who would have been interested to know that there was a suspicious person trying to enter a patient’s room, but in the moment, I didn’t really think about anything other than catching this person and stopping them before they could do even
more harm to Julian’s mom.
So I ran out of my office and the backrooms, and rushed straight into Gloria’s room. There, I found Healer Kevin peering over Gloria. He wasn’t holding a clipboard or looking at her file or anything, though he was still wearing his hospital scrubs.
I knew the staff that was currently on the clock, and Kevin was supposed to have left earlier in the night. It seemed strange to see him here now after hours, though I couldn’t exactly accuse him of being suspicious just
for that. After all, I was also here after hours.
Kevin looked up at me. “What’s the problem, Healer Amber?”
“What are you doing in here, Kevin?” I asked.
He narrowed his eyes a little at me. “I’m checking on a patient. Do I need another reason than that?”
“You aren’t on rotation here,” I said.
He stood a little straighter, even as he continued to glower at me. “You are a snoop, aren’t you?”
“Are you saying you are on rotation and supposed to be here? In that case, you can show me proper documentation, and I’ll apologize,” I said.
He frowned at me.
“It’s not wrong for a Healer to want to make sure a patient is alright,” he said.
“Maybe not,” I said. “But it is suspicious when that patient is the Alpha’s mother.”
He made a humph sound. “You are entirely too suspicious for your own good, Amber. It must be exhausting
being this paranoid. If you will excuse me…”
He could think what he wanted about me, I didn’t care about that. What mattered was that he was finally seeing
himself out now.

When he walked out the door, I tried to breathe easier. Yet, there was something about tonight – perhaps it was just the adrenaline pumping in my veins but something was making me uneasy. And I couldn’t place my finger on what.
I didn’t want to leave Gloria alone.
Rather than watching her through a monitor, I decided to stay in the room.
I moved to one of the chairs near her bedside and sat down to keep watch.
Unfortunately, as the adrenaline eased, my body was entirely exhausted. I was still nervous, but the tiredness
was just too strong.
My blinks became longer, and between one blink and the next, I fell asleep.
Someone rustled me, and I blinked open my eyes. At first, I thought it might be Julian, ready to carry me home and to my comfortable bed. But as my eyes adjusted to the sudden light, I realized this person trying to pick me
up in a bridal carry wasn’t Julian at all.
It was Tony.
Immediately, I hopped away from his hold, moving to the other side of the room, nearer the IV on the other side
of Gloria’s bed.
Tony watched me with a bemused expression on his face.
“What are you doing?” I asked him. Outside the window, the world was still dark. I wasn’t sure of the time but if it was still before dawn, it was too late for him to be here at the hospital. “How did you even get in?”
Visitors had already been asked to leave for the day. Tony shouldn’t have even been able to make it past security
to get this far.
“We’re the Alpha’s family,” Tony replied. “You think we don’t get special treatment? I was just worried about my aunt and wanted to check on her. I had a bad feeling about tonight. When I saw you sleeping there, I thought I’d move you. Your neck was at a weird angle. You should be thanking me.”
“Thanking you?”
“Yeah. I saved you from having terrible neck pain in the morning.”
I didn’t know if I believed that, and I certainly didn’t think it warranted a thanks.

But Kevin’s words stayed with me. Maybe I was just being paranoid. It was possible I’d been too tough on Tony
from the start. That whole family was very close. It wouldn’t entirely be out of the realm of possibility for Tony to want to spend time with his aunt.
After what their uncle Peter did, maybe it even made sense for him to want to check in the middle of the night.
There was something about it that just didn’t sit right with me though. Maybe it was innocent, but what if it wasn’t. Could I really justify leaving the room?
I didn’t think so. Maybe it was paranoia, maybe not, but I found myself, body and soul, utterly repulsed by the
idea of leaving Tony alone in this room with Gloria.
“I can stay for a while,” I said. “I’ll keep you company while you visit with your aunt.”
“That’s not necessary,” he said. “I’m sure you have other things to attend to. Shouldn’t you be at home? I’m
sure Julian is missing you.”
I didn’t care for his implication there, that I was warming Julian’s bed. What Julian and I were to each other, or
where we spent our nights, was none of his business. For him to even mention that was crass and inappropriate.
The words made me uncomfortable and put me even more on guard.
“I think we both should leave,” I said. “Allow Gloria some time and space to get some rest. She will still be here in the morning during regular visiting hours.”
Tony shook his head. “I’d feel better spending time with her now.”
“You can see her.” I gestured toward the bed. “She is here and she is safe, as you can clearly see. Whatever you are feeling, it can wait until morning. In fact, perhaps it would be best if I asked Julian to put some enforcers on
