Amber’s POV
“That’s enough,” Julian said, his voice billowing. If the tension in his shoulders and back were anything to go on, and I suspected that they were, then he wasn’t just furious about his family’s questioning, he was near raging.
Very gently, to help him control his wolf, I lifted my hand and placed it on his back at the shoulder. At first, he tensed further, but then, blessedly, started to relax under my palm.
His family must have sensed the danger rising in him too, because they fell silent at his command.
Tony could say what he wanted, and their family could believe who they wanted, but as of this moment, Julian was still the Alpha. His wolf was therefore still the strongest in the pack, and until he was challenged and would lose that challenge, this would remain true.
“Tony has chosen to make an enemy of me, but not by speaking against me to the press,” Julian said, his tone steadier now. “He made an enemy of me by deciding to poison my mate and my mother with wolfsbane.”
A small gasp went out through the family.
“What are you talking about?”
“Is that true?”
“What proof do you have of that?”
Gloria’s voice came from behind me, calling out, “If you doubt my son, you better come in here and do it in front of me. Because I won’t be tolerating it.”
For a long moment, everyone was silent. Then, a soft voice, Aunt Kathy’s asked, “…Gloria?”
“She’s awake,” Julian said. “And she would be happy to tell you the whole truth.”
Julian reached for and took my hand, and I did the same with Alice behind me. Then, together as a family, we stepped out of Gloria’s room and to the side, giving the family more room to enter and see their newly awakened kin.
The enforcers seemed nervous by this decision. They had stepped to either side of the door as Julian had started to come through it. But with a not to them, one of the enforcers stepped back into the room, while the other

Once the family’s attention was split, focusing more on Gloria now, Julian turned to Alice and me. With the sad sort of look he was giving me, I knew this was goodbye before his mouth even shaped the words.
“I have to go now,” he said.
“No,” I replied.
“I’m sorry,” he told me, then kneeled to speak to Alice.
“Where are you going, Daddy?” Alice asked.
“I just need to have a few words with Cousin Tony,” Julian said. “He and I are having a little disagreement that needs sorted out.”
Alice gripped my hand tightly. “Please don’t go, Daddy.”
Julian’s face crumpled. “I’m sorry, honey. I would if I could. But this is important. Stay with your Mom, and you will both be safe.”
“But what about you?” Alice asked.
Julian leaned in and kissed her on the top of her head. “Don’t you know how strong I am? There’s no one who can best me.”
He was strong, that much was true. But both of us were always better when we were together.
As Julian stood, I tried to convey that to him with just one word. “Julian.”
“I’ll be fine, Amber,” he said. Then, he leaned into me and gently pressed his lips to mine. It was a short peck of
a kiss that didn’t last at all. Too soon, he was pulling away. Then, he was turning and leaving us.
Alice and I watched him go, hand in hand. But as soon as he was out of sight, I felt my chest ache.
Fortunately, at this time, Aunt Kathy was getting ready to try to talk to Gloria. When she saw the desperation in my eyes, she came over to talk to me instead. “What is it, Amber?”
“Can you watch Alice, please?” I asked. “I need to go after Julian.”
“Mommy?” Alice asked, looking up at me.
“Someone has to keep an eye on your Daddy,” I told her.

She nodded, seemingly satisfied that I had come to this conclusion.

“I’d be happy to watch her,” Aunt Kathy said. She held her hand out, and Alice reached her very human hand out to take hers. To me, Aunt Kathy added, “Don’t let him do anything foolish.”
“I’ll do my best,” I promised, then took off running.
Julian, as soon as he stepped outside the hospital, must have also started running. I could sense his wolf in the
air. He must have shifted too, for speed.
I didn’t usually shift, preferring to stick to my human form. After all, my wolf form was weaker than most, as she had given so much to save me in that airplane crash. But right now, I begged for her help. I could feel her surge inside of me.
In a flash, I shifted to my wolf form too, and followed Julian’s scent.
It led me to the news station.
Julian, as a human, was entering the front door.
I shifted and followed him.
He was only in the front entrance, when Tony appeared. A camera crew was there too, already filming like they
had expected Julian to show up.
I had no idea what was said to start this argument, but when I walked inside the station, Tony was shouting.
“You checked out of the pack a long time ago, Julian! I’m happy you found love – we all are – but that’s not
excuse for putting the pack on the back burner. Someone who can’t put the pack first doesn’t deserve to be
Alpha!”
“You are simplifying a complicated issue,” Julian snapped back. “Would you even know how to run the pack?”
“I’m sure I’d run it better than you,” Tony countered.
“Oh? Is that true? Or would you just feed wolfsbane to everyone so they wouldn’t remember your mistakes?”
Tony frozen for a second, his eyes widening, but then he stood taller. “What is that supposed to mean?”
