Julian’s hands cupped my face, turning it to the side slightly, readjusting me so that he could deepen the kiss, licking his way into my mouth. I hummed against his lips, enjoying the expertise of his kissing.

I could probably kiss him forever, if pesky things like human needs didn’t get in the way.

For now, though, those needs were a distant thing. The only need I felt right now was being closer to this man. As close as I could get.

I raised my hands to his shoulders as I inched closer to him, dragging myself across the seat so that I was nestled right at his side.

One of his arms dropped behind me, tracing a tantalizing line down the straight of my back.

Needing to be closer still, I lifted one of my legs to stretch over his lap. Then, I pulled myself up and over him.

Our kiss broke. He looked up at me, grinning.

You are so beautiful,he said.

Slowly, I lowered myself down, eager to press my clothed center against his growing hardness. Yet, when the backs of my thighs brushed the fronts of his, he winced.

I froze at once, both in movement and temperature, like someone had dropped a bucket of ice water over my head.

I’d hurt him. Inadvertently, but still. I never wanted to hurt him, not even on accident.

When his face smoothed out again, he touched my face again. You can move, Amber. I’m okay.

No,I said. We have to stop.

But

>>

I won’t hurt you,I said. We can wait.

He blinked a few times as he seemed to comprehend my words. Wait. That implies that this will happen again ?His statement ended with an unasked question.

Yes,I said. That is what it implies.

With a heavy exhale, he nodded. Okay.

Then, gently, so as not to hurt him further, I rolled off of him and back onto my seat. His cheeks still heated, as were my own, he gripped his pants and lifted them back up.

We both could only relax when he was put together again, the evidence of his desire tucked away again.

I didn’t move far away though, and when he was covered once more, I slid back into the space beside him, pressing as close as I could against his side, while being mindful of the wounds on his legs that might have been

too close.

His arm dropped behind me, wrapping firmly around me and keeping me there.

I rested my head on his shoulder, and he turned his to place his chin on the top of my head.

It was nice, being close to him like this. Even without sex, I felt as if we were growing closer, the mating bond strumming happily between us. Inside my wolf was content to be so near our mate.

Like this, in the quiet, with only the sounds of the car and the road around us, I felt more centered than I had in a long time. I hoped he felt the same. His rage had nearly taken over him again today. It was important for him to remain calm.

Or at least not angry.

In this quiet, I started to feel responsible for all the troubles facing Julian. I didn’t regret reuniting with him, not now, not like this, but I could admit if we had stayed apart, he wouldn’t be facing these same accusations from

Tony now.

If Julian hadn’t chased me to that small pack where I had started my clinic with Anna, then he would have been more readily available in his own pack. Tony’s argument wouldn’t have had any legs to stand on.

Hindsight was crystal clear, of course, and there was little to be done for any of this now. But that didn’t alleviate my guilt. Only an apology would do the trick.

I’m sorry, Julian.

Julian chuckled. I’m the one who is injured. I should be apologizing.

My cheeks heated up again. Not about that.

Oh.

I paused for a moment, allowing time for the new awkwardness to pass. When I felt it had sufficiently done so, I spoke up once more, If I hadn’t made you say those things, that recording device would have been useless and you could have been spared all this trouble.

Hey.Julian lifted his free hand and cupped my cheek. Gently, he lifted my head, coaxing my gaze upward to his. I said those things because I wanted to and because I meant them. You didn’t make me say or do anything.

My heart melted once more.

We aren’t the ones at fault,he said. They are. Tony is. That recording device invaded our privacy and never should have been there at all. I’m more upset about our privacy being invaded than I am about anyone knowing my true feelings about you. Let the world know I love you. But our private moments should be just for us.

Leaning up, I kissed him softly in an attempt to take away the sting from his voice.

Let them know, though,Julian said against my lips. I’m never leaving you in the dark again.
