Amber’s POV

It was going to be fine, I was sure, despite Rafael’s worry. No one should expect me to arrive at the clinic. Why would they? When I was purportedly just visiting my brother. The clinic might have some eyes on it, from some people that could be suspecting me of arriving, but for the most part, I imagined I was in the clear.

Or at least, I didn’t think the place would be overrun while I was there. Hopefully, I would be in and out before the crowds could form. I really just needed to get working on this though.

I was inspired and needed to try to find a cure while the ideas were fresh in my mind.

And with Julian beside me, I didn’t think anything could go wrong. He had already proven that he would protect me no matter what, and Rafael too, because of who Rafael was to me.

“If Julian stays with you the entire time,” Rafael said, shooting Julian a glance that said, you better. “ Then I see no reason to hold you back. But do try to be quick, sister. The longer you are there, the more likely that word will get out about it.”

“I’ll be quick,” I said, even though I wasn’t sure if that was true or not. I wouldn’t know, not until I was in the process, how close I actually was to a cure. It could take the rest of the day, it could take multiple days, but I wasn’t going to let fear of a crowd drive me away from helping my daughter and Matthew, as well as any other child inflicted with the same condition.

Rafael believed me on face value, which I felt a little guilty about, and directed the driver to take me to the clinic. “We can’t wait for you. If people see my car here, they will get suspicious.”

“I understand,” I said.

“Call when you need a ride home. I will bring the enforcers with me if the crowd is too large.”

“Okay,” I said.

The car drove right up to the front of the clinic. Julian and I hopped out in a hurry, trying not to be seen as we rushed inside. I waved to the nurse at the counter, who seemed surprised, but waved back.

“We’ll be in the lab,” I said. “Don’t tell anyone.”

She saluted me.

We rushed to the lab where another healer was working. He was just finishing up though and gave up his spot for us.

“I only needed to make a few potions. That should last me for the day,” he said.

“If you need the workbench, please tell me,” I told him. “I will take breaks if necessary, but I imagine I’ll be working for some time here.”

He nodded. “Have a lead on the cure, huh?”

Everyone in the clinic, who I had previously worked with, knew what drove me the most. Even if they didn’t understand why, because we didn’t like to share about Alice’s condition, they still knew I was eager to find a cure for the disease. They had always been encouraging, so it was nice to see that

trend continue.

With the Healer cleared out, I replaced him at the workbench. Immediately I retrieved Matthew’s blood sample and started to process it.

By now, Julian had worked beside me in many clinics, in many ways. He slipped into the role of my assistant so easily here, only needing the barest direction to know what I wanted him to do and how.

It was a relief having someone so competent at my side. And his closeness gave me strength and confidence through our bond. I could feel his belief in me, and that helped me to believe in myself.

As we worked, time had no meaning. I was totally engrossed in the process, blind to all else.

Julian, fortunately, was less entranced by the work. He left now and then to place food in front of me, then reminded me to eat it, and reminded again until I did. When I did take breaks, to go to the bathroom or to stretch, he would talk to me about anything and everything to give my mind a break.

Usually that helped, and when I returned to the work, I was refreshed. Eventually, it got to be late, and I was getting frustrated that I hadn’t had a breakthrough yet.

I knew it was coming. I could feel it on the edge of my thoughts. There was something I was missing here. Something obvious.

But the more I tried to clutch onto the thought, the less I seemed to hold it at all. It was like trying to grip a pile of sand. I kept feeling it slip through my fingertips.

“Hey,” Julian said, after I let out a groan of frustration. “Why not take a break?”

“I’m so close to an answer,” I told him. “I know the cure is just right there.”

“Take a breather,” Julian said. “Come and sit here with me. Then you can get back to it. Five minutes, that’s all I’m asking.”

I couldn’t deny him five minutes, so with a sigh, I pushed back from the workbench.

Julian was sitting on a nearby couch in the room. There sometimes an overworked Healer would sneak in a quick nap between double shifts. Right now, it was empty though. Well, except for Julian.

The soft cushions of the couch did appear more comfortable than the hard metal of the stool at the

workbench, so I went over to him and sat down beside him. The minute I did, he stretched his arm out and around my shoulders.

“You are still thinking about it,” he said.

I was. “How can you tell?”

“You are too tense.”
