Alpha's Remorse After Her Death (Amber and Julian) novel Chapter 315

Chapter 315

Julian’s POV

Looking at Alice and Amber talking to one another, resolving this issue. Alice was only six, but she was already so resolute, so determinedShe was like a miniature version of her daughter. I could only imagine the trouble she was going to be as she grew up, and I couldn’t wait to see it.

Alice wouldn’t let Amber and I out of her sight for the rest of the day, so it wasn’t until much later, when Amber and I were finally alone in the hallway outside of our bedrooms, Alice tucked in and asleep, that we were finally able to talk privately again.

She’s just like you, you know,I told Amber. She smiled like I had just given her the greatest compliment in the world.

Still, Amber shushed me. Come on,she said. We should speak somewhere else.

She’s asleep,I said.

Amber gave me a flat look. I don’t trust her not to sneak out of her bed and listen.

This was how Amber and I found ourselves in my bedroom this time. The master was much larger than Amber’s, and gave us more space to walk and talk, far away from the door and whatever tiny ears might be pressed against it.

I was still certain that Alice was asleep, but I had been just as certain she wouldn’t follow us down to the kitchen. Perhaps practicing caution was the best thing to do.

I was thinking about what we talked about, about Tony being awkward around kids,Amber said. It’s a good idea, in theory, to find a way to show that for the pack to see. But how would we even begin to make that happen?

I have a few ideas,I admitted. Though they are less about bringing Alice into danger, and more about confronting Tony myself.

You promised Aunt Kathy that you would try every avenue before violence,Amber said. Do you feel like you’ve already done that?.

No,I admitted. My plan doesn’t have a lot to do with violence. Instead, I’m thinking of going on the offensive in a different way, with the help of the press.

Amber lifted a lone brow. What do you have in mind?

A press conference, for one,I said, grinning now, because I felt more confident than I had in days. Knowing my two best girls were going to stay here with me helped lift my spirits more than they would ever know.

Even Amber couldn’t resist when I was like this. She tried to hide it, but I saw the way her lips started to curl as I grinned. She liked my confidence, and always had.

I inched closer to her, happy when she didn’t move.

You like to play dangerous games, Julian, she said.

I’m not playing games,I said, Not with TonyAnd not with you.

Julian

Amber, all I want to do is kiss you.

One kiss, she said. And then we should say goodnight.

Truly, I wanted so much more than just to kiss her, but I was willing to settle for just that, not wanting to put any pressure on Amber.

She was my mate, and the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. As eager as I was for that part of my life to begin as soon as possible, I was also desperate not to ruin things again.

For Amber, I would wait forever for her to be comfortable, for her to want me again, just like I wanted her, heart, body, and soul.

So I inched forward even more, slowly closing the distance between us.

Her lips curled up in the shadow of a smile as she tilted her head toward me.

Eagerly, I lowered my mouth down to hers.

The next morning, with Amber by my side, and Alice wedged into the space between us, holding each of our hands, we stood outside of our estate and allowed the photographers and the reporters to get all the pictures and sound bites they wanted.

Alice squeezed my hand tightly. I knew she was frightened, but true to her word, she seemed determined to see this through. Her obvious bravery helped me find my own. The three of us could survive this, and anything else that came our way, together.

I asked all of you to join me today because I want to make a few things clear,I said, speaking loudly so that all the microphones could pick up my voice. This pack is, as it always has been, my home. This is where I intend to raise my family, and this pack is where I intend to grow old.

There have been many misconceptions as of late about how my choosing to help other packs has led me to feel some kind of way about my own pack, but let me be clear. I have no intention of leaving.

I took a minute to allow the reporters to process my words, as well as to catch my breath.

My cousin Tony has said a lot of things about me, and has attempted to cast shade on my reputation. I’m tired of dealing with shadows and sound bites,I said. If Tony has issues with me, he should be a man and confront me directly. Stop going through interviews, or speaking at rallies only surrounded by your own supporters.

I lifted my gaze to the cameras, hoping I was speaking directly at Tony as I said.

Tony, you and me. Let’s settle this with a debate. There, we can voice our opinions out in the open in front of everyone in the pack, and the good people of this pack can decide once and for all, without spin or lies, who they will choose to support as Alpha.

Accepting this would be a terrible mistake,I said, looking at Tony.
