“Great job,” Maximus said, patting one of the warriors on the shoulder, after a harsh training, something that the king normally didn’t do.
Hell. The king even almost killed all of them in the training if it was not for the royal beta’s interference. But now, he was being very approachable, and the warrior looked like he was being slapped, as he watched the king walked away.
“What is it? Something makes you happy?” Declan asked, as he approached Maximus with a table in his hand, which full with the king’s schedule for the day. One of the elders asked to meet with the king to discuss about Rania’s role for this kingdom.
People had been agitated because the king didn’t make any move to announce his mate, not only that, he kept all the people away from her, therefore, Rania had never met any of them, aside from the people that the king approved of, such as the omega, who had been helping her with day to day life.
“Nothing,” Maximus said briefly, as he took a bottle of water and gulped it down, when there was only half of it, he poured it on his head.
“Nothing?” Declan raised his brows when he saw the smirk on his face. It could be anything, but he didn’t like it whenever the king started smirking like this, because it could mean he had a hidden agenda. “No more waging war. You have stretched out finance, and you have gathered enough protest from the alphas.”
Maximus raised his brows. “Those cities that we conquered, will pay tribute for us, instead of their kingdom, which meant another income, and who the alphas, who had been protesting about it? As far as I remember, there are only ten packs, who actually disagreed with the war out of forty packs in this kingdom.”
Declan was speechless, he thought Maximus didn’t listen when he gave him that information. He said nothing for a while, before he changed the subject.
“Elder Gayle wanted to see to discuss the matter about Rania,” Declan said, which met with a scoff from the king.
“Tell him to fuck off.” Maximus wiped the sweat from his forehead.
“Max, you can’t always do whatever you want. There are a few traditions that you have to uphold, and you can’t fight them in every chance possible.”
“Why not?” Maximus threw the towel, and then strode away. He was more interested to hear the progress with his warriors, that had been advancing to the heart of the Barlukan kingdom.
“Max…” Declan groaned in frustration, as he followed him walking in the corridor. It was always him, who had to cover for the king, whenever he was against the elders. It gave him a headache on top of anything else. “We still need the elders.”
“For what?” Maximus suddenly stopped, and turned around, and Declan almost ran into him, which made him growl in annoyance, but the king didn’t even flinch. “What we need them for?” He raised his brows questioningly. “If it were up to me, I will send them all to the front line as cannon fodders, only then they will be useful.”

“Max!” Declan widened his eyes, if it was someone else, he would take that as a joke, but when Maximus said that, he actually had it in his mind, it only needed a little push for him to actually make it happen. “We need to respect our elders.”
Maximus scoffed at that statement, as if Declan had something very funny, and then he walked away again
toward his office.
“Max, there are traditions that we need to uphold no matter how much you hate them.”
“Fuck them all.” Maximus would never forget the pain that those imbeciles had inflicted on him.
“Max.”
“Fuck them all. I will feed them to the wild wolves if they try to intervene with my personal life again, tell that
to them.”
And that was the end of it, Declan knew better not to push him further, because Maximus might have one that just to spite him, something that he might likely do out of his rage, impulsiveness.
Therefore, Declan talked about something else entirely, but of course, he would give elder Gayle the watered down version of what Maximus said.
And when they entered the office, one of the warrior entered the room as well to let them know that the former beta from the Black Stone pack was here to see the king.
“The former beta? Rania’s father.” Declan answered his own question, he frowned, he wanted to tempt to tell the warrior to send the former beta away, because he didn’t think this was appropriate to demand meeting the king when he didn’t make any appointment beforehand.
But, to his surprised, Maximus gave the permission, and asked the warrior to bring Alaric to his study.
“You have three meetings in this afternoon,” Declan protested, he didn’t know how long the conversation would last, but he assumed, with Alaric had gone so far from his pack to meet with the king, it wouldn’t be an hour or two conversation.
“Clear my afternoon and evening meeting,” Maximus said.
“No, you can’t do that,” Declan refused. He didn’t want to rearrange the meeting with those annoying alphas, he wanted the matter that they would discuss in the meeting to be done quickly, so he could handle another
matter.
“Of course, I can. I want to know what he is going to say. It will be interesting.”
And that was the cue for Declan to back down, because Maximus would do as he pleased. “I don’t want to hear anything about this. I am going to leave. I have a lot of things to handle.”
The royal beta gave the king a nasty look, because he indulged himself in the affair of his mate, neglecting his duty, but then Declan knew it could be worse than this.
When Declan walked out of the room, to inform the cancelation of the meeting, and taking care of another matter, Alaric was being escorted into the study, both of them nodded politely, but they didn’t exchange a
