The car made two turns before stopping. The driver turned to Emily and said, “I only helped you out of respect for your sister. I cannot afford to cross Ashton. From now on, you are on your own to get close to

them.”

Emily gritted her teeth. “No wonder my sister doesn’t like you.”

The man shrugged, unconcerned. “I don’t care. That’s all in the past. Your sister and I broke up a long time ago. Get out of the car.”

If that woman didn’t have something on him, he wouldn’t have risked offending Ashton to get involved in this

mess.

Ashton said, “Honey, this plan to lure them out was your idea. You can’t just abandon poor, helpless me to face that pack of wolves from the Wade family all alone!”

Ashton’s dramatic reaction finally made Briar laugh. She pushed at the man leaning on her. “That’s enough. How are you helpless?”

Ashton draped himself all over Briar, refusing to be pushed away. He even wrapped his arms around her waist. “I don’t care. I’ve been kicked out of the family. You’re the only family I have left.”

Briar replied, “If your real parents heard you say that, they’d chase you down three streets to beat you.”

Ashton said, “I don’t care. Honey, you can’t leave me all alone.”

Completely exasperated by Ashton’s unreasonable behavior, Briar gave in. She cupped his face in her hands and nodded. “Alright, I won’t leave you. I’ll stay with you. Just stop nuzzling me.”

Only then did Ashton pull back. “Then let’s go face the storm together.”

Briar sighed. “You really need me for such a small storm?”

“It’s precisely the small stuff that I want you with me for. If it were a big storm, how could I let you get involved?” Ashton didn’t actually need Briar to face anything. He was just giving her an excuse to vent her anger.
