Because of the scandal, Skyler’s reputation among his peers and subordinates became a point of ridicule. In less than two days, he had lost several major deals.

So, Skyler vented all his fury on Marnie. The couple quarreled bitterly, while their housekeepers pricked up their ears, unwilling to miss a single bit of gossip.

In the end, Skyler stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind him, but not before saying, “Just wait and see.”

Inside the master bedroom, Marnie covered her swollen cheeks and wept quietly, having been slapped twice by Skyler.

Sonia had witnessed her parents fight more than once, but had never stepped in. After Skyler left, Sonia snuck into the room and handed Marnie a pack of tissues. “Mom, stop crying. The staff members outside are waiting to watch the spectacle. Your tears will just give them material for idle chatter.”

Although Sonia loathed Skyler for having an affair, Marnie’s causing such a public scene had also caused her endless trouble. She could never forget the mocking looks on the guests‘ faces when Skyler’s infidelity and Marnie’s outburst had been broadcast on the cruise ship’s big

screen.

Wiping her tears, Marnie ordered coldly, “I want that bitch ruined.”

Sonia let out a short laugh. “She’s just a saleswoman. Is she really worth you hysterically destroying the perfect image you’ve built up for years?

“Mom, you’ve been teaching me this since I was little. When you find the right partner, you do whatever it takes to win him over, even if he’s already married.

“When you set your eyes on Dad, wasn’t it exactly his family background that tempted you? You schemed and destroyed his previous marriage just to marry into the Woodward family.

“There are only two kinds of women in this world. The first are the ones who will endure poverty for love. The second are the ones who will share a husband with others for the sake of wealth and status.

“Dad may not be the top of the elite, but he’s well–connected in Windmere. When you tore apart his previous marriage to become Mrs. Woodward, you should have prepared yourself. If he could leave Lilith for you, then he can just as easily leave you for that saleswoman.”

Sonia smoothed Marnie’s disheveled hair. “You want love and security? Life doesn’t hand out such bargains.”

Hearing that, Marnie stared at her daughter. Sonia was just barely in her 20s, yet her words. were chillingly ruthless. “Sonia, are you just going to stand by while your father cheats with those trashy women?”

Sonia smiled faintly. “Those women are nothing more than toys for Dad to spice up his life. Your only duty is to guard the position of Mrs. Woodward and not let them slip in.

“Think of Lilith’s fate. She left with nothing for the sake of her so–called dignity. And what happened? She disappeared without a trace, while her only daughter was left to suffer in the countryside.”

Even if Valerie had come back as a top scholar, in Sonia’s eyes, she was still a failure.

Sonia’s words were like a bucket of cold water. Marnie realized she had let anger cloud her

judgment, forgetting her original purpose in marrying Skyler.

Skyler had always been a notorious playboy. Even in his first marriage, Marnie was far from the only affair. Back then, she had clawed and schemed her way into becoming Mrs. Woodward. She couldn’t possibly hand over what she had fought so hard for just because of a moment of rage.
