Bound By Moonlight to My Mates (by Sofange Daye) novel Chapter 48

Chapter 48

Charlotte

The hallways of the Southpaw pack house are hushed. The setting sun outside is creating awkward shadows across the floors, almost like they are warning me to turn back. Each step I take feels like I am sealing my I can only focus on the box and my father, but someone else slips into my mind. Ethel. She gave me the box; maybe she will know how I can find it once again.

I reach Damon’s door before I can overthink my plan. My knuckles hover above the wood as I shuffle from foot to foot.

Knock, Tala hisses in my mind.

I am almost positive that she is hoping Damon will sleep with us again, and because of that, I push her to the side. There is no time for sex. She growls as I put her behind a wall in my mind.

My fingers rap on his door, and I instantly regret my decision.

Come in,he calls out. His voice is rough and low, reminding me of how he whispered my name just two nights ago.

I step inside, finding him sitting at a desk. His sleeves are rolled u,p and papers are scattered everywhere. His dark hair falls over his forehead as he leans over the desk. He looks more like a warlord than a rogue tonight. The edge of his jaw is so tight I can hear him grinding his teeth together.

Charlotte,he says without looking up. Shouldn’t you be with Leah?

She’s sleeping,I answer. My voice sounds steadier than I feel. I need to talk to you.”

That gets his attention. He leans back, eyes narrowing as he studies me. Are you here to collect another mark?

Yikes,I whisper. That was a little harsh.

His expression doesn’t change. I am not going to fuck you into a better mood either.

My eyes roll, and a groan escapes my lips. Stop acting like a child and hear me out.

He stands behind the desk, leaning on it like he is bored. About what?

I

step

inside and close the door behind me. About leaving.”

The silence between us stretches, and his brows draw together. Leaving?

I want to go to the Blackthorn Pack. The words spill out faster now, and I am unable to stop them. There’s a woman there. Ethel. She used to work with me at the diner beforeMy fingers graze along the mark on my neck. Before all of this. She’s the one who gave me the box. My father’s box. I think she might be able to tell me more about it or how to find it. I need to speak with her.

Damon’s eyes flicker as he considers my plan. Charlotte, this is the worst possible time. Have you forgotten that Ronan wants to kill you?

I know.I cut him off. I know. But if my father left me that box, it wasn’t just a keepsake. It was a message. And with everything that’s happening, with the sickness spreading, with Leah, with Jake, with youI need answers. I can’t sit here waiting for the next disaster to hit.”

He walks around the desk, towering over me, and for a heartbeat, I almost back down. You’re asking me to take you into hostile territory. Why aren’t you asking Jake? He is the one who marked you. Technically, he is your mate.

His words are meant to wound me, and they do. You are my mate too,” I whisper.

He tilts my head up and runs his thumb over my bottom lip. Why me?

My breath hitches in my chest. I’m asking you because you’re the only one I can trust to get me in and out of there alive.

He drops his hand, but he doesn’t look away. Jake isn’t going to like this.

I keep my head high. I’m not telling Jake.”

That earns me a faint, but bitter smile. Of course you’re not.”

I step closer, lowering my voice. Please, Damon. If anyone can get me to Ethel without it blowing up, it’s you.”

He exhales through his nose, stepping away from me and dragging a hand through his hair. You have no idea just how bad

of an idea this is.

I do.

He paces the floor, mumbling under his breath. Cursing me, Jake, and the Moon Goddess. I keep quiet and let him weigh the options in his mind. He will help me. I know he will.

Finally, he stops pacing and pins me with his gaze. If we do this. We do it my way. No contact, no warning anyone. We go in quietly and we come out fast.
