Chapter 23
Lisa stood on stage speaking confidently, explaining the company’s founding purpose and calling capable people to join the effort.
She introduced the first project: developing the western Countryside Hamlet area rich in wild mushrooms. She planned eco–friendly
development tailored to local conditions, aiming to bring young migrant workers back home……
David stood in the corner watching Lisa in her sharp suit, delivering her speech with assurance. A flicker of admiration crossed his eyes.
He hadn’t seen her shine like this in ages. Since being with him, she’d been trapped at the bottom of a well–her world reduced to just him.
She’d bet everything on loving him, yet he’d failed her.
Now, David finally understood Lisa’s cold detachment.
The Lisa who loved him had died through his repeated betrayals. Only by leaving him completely could she be reborn.
This Lisa pursued passions and embraced the life she craved–she’d escaped that well.
Maybe he shouldn’t disturb her anymore.
“Why are you here again?” Lisa spotted David immediately after stepping offstage.
He looked increasingly disheveled, as if deliberately self–destructing.
“Lisa,” he rasped, gaze burning into her, “are you happier without me?”
“Yes,” she stated firmly.
David lowered his eyes, mouth twisting bitterly. “I’m sorry for hurting you.”
