Caroline opened her mouth to respond, but instead, a sharp gasp tore from her lips. Her face contorted in pain, and she clutched her head as if trying to hold herself together. My heart jumped into my throat.
“Caroline!” I reached out instinctively, gripping her shoulders, trying to steady her. “What’s going on? Are you okay? Talk to me
She looked up, her face pale and strained, as if she was struggling to hold back a scream. ‘It’s… it’s like my head… it feels like it’s being crushed from the inside out. I don’t understand,” she managed to whisper, her voice trembling. She winced again, her fingers digging into her temples.
“Then you need to get to the pack healer, now,” I urged, trying to guide her toward the stadium exit. “This isn’t normal, Caroline. You shouldn’t be drating with this on your own-
But she pulled back, shaking her head, her eyes squeezed shut as if fighting the agony in her mind. ‘No… no, it’s not me, Caleb, she said softly, her voice tight with pain but filled with a strange certainty.
“What do you mean, it’s not you?” I asked, confusion slicing through my worry. “Caroline, you’re the one in pain right now. You’re-
“It’s not me,” she interrupted, her eyes finally opening to meet mine, and there was something dark, almost haunted in her gaze. It’s not my pain. It’s her. It’s Aurora’s. I… I know it.” Her words hung heavy between us, and I felt a shiver crawl up my spine as the reality of her connection with Aurora became painfully, disturbingly clear.
I stared at Caroline, my mind scrambling to make sense of what was happening. “Caroline, please. You’re talking like you’re…connected to her or something. How do you feel Aurora’s pain?” I asked, the confusion seeping through my voice as I tried to keep up with whatever was unfolding around us.
She was acting off, her focus distant, as if she were tuning into some frequency I couldn’t hear, and it was starting to unnerve me. I felt useless, just standing here, watching her sense things I couldn’t.
Her eyes flicked to mine, urgent, her expression almost pained. “I don’t have time to explain, Caleb. It’s complicated, but I need you to trust me. Aurora’s in trouble. We have to hurry to the parking lot–now!” She grabbed my arm, her grip strong and determined, but it was the look in her eyes that propelled me into action.
Without another word, I bent down, scooped Caroline up in my arms, and started rushing towards the parking lot. Every instinct screamed at me to move faster, to get to Aurora. But something about Caroline’s tone, the way she looked at me, made my pulse quicken even more.
“Are you sure she’s there? How do you know that?” I panted as I rounded the corner, practically sprinting to the exit, hoping that no one noticed us.
“Yes! Caleb, just trust me, please,” she whispered, her voice nearly breaking as her eyes darted ahead, focusing on the parking lot.
“We’re almost there. Just a little farther.” I tried to push out the questions spinning in my head. There would be time later to ask how she knew, why she was so certain. Right now, I have to get to Aurora.
As we burst through the doors into the parking lot, my footsteps slowed, and I felt Caroline’s grip tighten on my shoulder. My blood turned to ice at the sight before me. There, lying on the cold ground, was Aurora–and Damien. He was leaning over her, his mouth pressed against hers in a way that made my stomach twist. I froze, my heart hammering in my chest as the reality of the scene settled in.
