Chapter 229
Caleb’s POV
I was standing in the middle of the room, feeling like the walls were closing in around me. The air felt thick with tension, and I couldn’t understand what was happening. The silence was deafening, broken only by the frantic rustling of my father, Alpha Camden, as he tried to get a hold of the Chrone of the
Lunar coven. His hands trembled as he dialed the number for the third time.
“No answer. This isn’t right,” my father muttered, his voice low, almost as if speaking louder would make things worse. He looked over at me, his face a picture of unease. “Caleb, something’s wrong. I think there is something going on in that coven.”
“Then we need to go to the coven’s territory.” I told him, urgency coloring my voice. “We need to figure out what’s going on before it’s too late.”
“Caleb, it’s not that simple.” My father shook his head. “I need to get permission from the local pack first or this can be seen as a sign of war.”
I ran a hand through my hair, the weight of his words sinking in. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was bigger than us, something we weren’t prepared for. “But we don’t even know what happened to Aurora’s mother. Her body’s gone, Dad. This doesn’t make sense.” My mind was racing, trying to make serise of it all, but I couldn’t.
“Search the CCTV footage outside the graveyard, the ones that line the road,” I said suddenly, a surge of frustration bubbling up. “There’s got to be something. Maybe we can figure out who took her, someone can’t just go out carrying a corpse in their arms. There must have been a vehicle.”
My father didn’t hesitate. He moved toward the door, ready to head to the police station. “I’m on it,” he muttered. “I’ll ask Sheriff Gilbert to assist with the search.”
Once he was gone, I turned to Caroline, who was standing quietly in the corner, her face pale. She looked lost, but when our eyes met, I could see the desperation in hers. She was just as confused and worried as I was, maybe more. “Caroline,” I said softly, “Can you still feel Aurora?”
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and nodded, her hands trembling at her sides. “I can feel her… but it’s not good, Caleb. It’s fear. She’s terrified, and it breaks my heart. She doesn’t know where she is, but whatever’s happening, it’s something horrible. I don’t think she’s safe.”
I took a step toward her, the gravity of her words sinking in like a stone. “How do we even know where to look?” My voice cracked, the panic creeping in now. My heart was racing, and the urgency in Caroline’s voice only made it worse.
“She’s out there somewhere,” Caroline whispered, her voice shaking. “And I don’t know how to reach her.” She wiped a tear from her cheek, but it didn’t stop the next one from falling. “I just don’t know if we’ll be able to get to her in time.”
The room seemed to shrink around me. My mother’s voice cut through the tension as she spoke, her eyes dark with determination. “Caleb, we’re going to
tom/of find her. I won’t let anything happen to her. We’ll get to the bottom of this, together.”
But even as she said it, there was a hesitation in her voice. She didn’t know how, but she was trying to reassure us. Trying to reassure herself.
I nodded, trying to offer her a small smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes. I couldn’t help the cold, gnawing fear that’s been eating away at me ever since I lost touch with her. It’s like a hole in my chest, and the only thing that used to fill it-her-is gone.
I can’t even feel her anymore, not the familiar warmth that used to wrap around me, not the connection that always kept us tethered. It’s just empty now. I’ve tried everything, but nothing is working. It’s like she’s disappeared from my senses, and every second without knowing what’s going on with her, every second of silence, makes my anxiety claw its way up my throat. I can’t be helpless like this, can’t just wait for something to happen. But what else am I supposed to do?
Damien must’ve sensed my panic because he walks up beside me, his voice steady and reassuring as always. “Caleb, whatever happens, I’m with you. I’ll help however I can.” His words do little to calm the storm raging in my mind, but they give me a small tether to hold onto in the chaos. I turn to him, my hands shaking even though I’m trying to keep myself together. “I need you to come with me,” I tell him, barely meeting his eyes.
‘Meet me outside. We need to talk.”
Damien doesn’t hesitate, just nods and turns to Caroline. He tells her to rest for now, that he’ll be back soon, and steps out with me into the hallway. We don’t say anything at first, the silence between us thick with unspoken fears, but I can’t keep it inside anymore. “You know where we’re going, right?” I ask, voice low, but sharp with determination.
“We need to go to the coven-Harmony’s old coven. Something isn’t right, Damien. I think she’s been lying to us. She’s been playing both sides. And now How it’s clear she’s betrayed us.”
Chapter 229
Damien takes a deep breath, his gaze steady on mine. He doesn’t ask questions, doesn’t hearate. He bands exactly what I mean, and for the first rien, I che see that even he’s feeling the weight of it. Harmona wasn’t just someone we trusted; she was antenne de depended on, and now… How everything hele be it’s been built on lies. It’s hard to even wrap my mind around. How could we have been so blind?
I understand what you’re going through, Caleb, but we’re not doing this alone, Bainien says firmly, his voice more than a promite-it’s a ou Whatever waiting for us there, we’ll face it together. But your father is also tight…we need permission to enter another pack’s territory.”
1 let out a sigh of frustration, running a hand through my hair to mess it up even further. “It’s the most difficult part, this waiting. Each second we made, it feels like she’s slipping further away from.”
“How about we search her room first,” Damien said suddenly, his eyes widening with realization. “If there’s anything left behind anything at all that can point us in the right direction, we’ll have our answers.”
