Chapter 98
Caleb’s POV
I was about to head to my first class, Geography, when I though I heard Caroline’s voice from down the hall.
The hallways were all empty after the first bell, and with the second bell only a minute away, the only people who would be loitering around would be the ones who wanted to cut class and smoke weed in the washrooms. But Caroline wasn’t one of them. I don’t think she had ever cut class in her life
Which was why I found the situation to be a bit odd, to say the least. Did I hear it right? Was I mistaken about the voice?
“Why? Why would you do such a thing?”
Yup. It was definitely Caroline. It was a voice I had heard since I was a child.
Changing routs before the teacher spotted me, I headed down the empty hallway that led to an empty classroom at the end of the hail, and found the door locked, as expected. But it wasn’t going to stop me from finding out what was going on. So I used only a bit of my strength, and the lock broke right off as I pulled the door open to find five girls, four of the cheerleading squad, standing in a semi circle.
Caroline had her arms folded across her chest and she looked pissed, while around her stood Mia, Cindy, Laura and Trisha, all looking more than a bit guilty. My frown deepened when I realized what this might be about.
I was however, a little disappointed that Caroline didn’t talk to me before confronting the four of them. Especially since the situation involved me as well.
“What’s going on?” I asked, coming inside the classroom and shutting the door behind me. “Caroline?”
Caroline let out a huge sigh. “Trisha and Mia told Aurora that my parents were disappointed to find out that I wasn’t your mate and that they were debating if they would stay in the pack or support you being the next Alpha!”
“What?” I looked at the four of them incredulously, the anger in my voice making them flinch. “What the hell has gotten into you guys? Why would you make something up like that?”
“But it’s the truth!” Mia protested immediately, her frown deepening. “Ask Caroline!”
“Caroline?” I looked at her, ready for her to defend me, only to find her lowering her gaze.
Suddenly, the truth of the situation settled upon my shoulders like a heavy shroud. The color drained from my face as I noticed that Caroline refused to speak, refused to meet my eyes.
“Care?” I managed to choke out, my voice barely a whisper.
Fuck! So it was true? Was this the complication that she was talking about the night of my birthday? Was this what her parents were up to? How could someone be so selfish?
“They didn’t say they wouldn’t support you,” Caroline finally admitted the truth, though she still refused to meet my gaze. “But they were debating if they should let me stay in the pack after what happened. I’m not going to leave the pack, ever, but they want me to go study abroad in hopes of finding my mate.”
Abroad? That was just as good as her leaving the pack/forever. How could I ever accept that?
I didn’t understand why her parents were rushing her into finding a mate when she wasn’t even eighteen yet! And how on earth did Cindy come to know of it anyways? Some sort of pack gossip column that wasn’t aware of?
But that’s not what got my attention in the whole conversation; it was the person they said all this to. “And you said all this to Aurora?” This time, I didn’t even try to mask the animosity in my voice. I was beyond pissed at these girls for messing with my mate for their own gain. “What other lies did you tell her? SPILL!”
No wonder Aurora was pulling away from me so rapidly and running in the other direction! She probably believed in all their lies and thought she was protecting me and Caroline.
Mia flinched back but held her ground. “There weren’t any lies! You drove Shane away from his pack for someone you barely know! You put that girl before.

“That girl is
my mate.” I spoke well. You can’t break the mating
through gritted teeth, my
