After Amelia heard that Owen's proposal had its own difficulties as well, she relaxed and whispered, "Mr. Owen, I can understand your filial piety, but shouldn't you notify me in advance? I was almost scared to death by your proposal just now! I really thought that you were trying to put me out on the frying pan and into the fire!"
Upon hearing Amelia's words, Patrick became extremely annoyed. "Is the Hopper Family such a living hell for you?"
She looked back at him and answered provocatively, "Fine, just consider it as I have said something wrong. I'm the living hell, and I can't bear seeing the Hopper Family jump into this fiery pit with me. Mr. Hopper, I take that you're satisfied with this way of saying, right?"
Patrick's eyes turned cold, and he replied bluntly, "It's good as long as you know your place!"
"It's precisely because I know, that I didn't claim to have any connections with anybody from a higher social class in front of old Mr. Hopper." Amelia replied.
When Owen saw that they were about to argue again, he cleared his throat and interrupted, "Miss
Ramsay, please listen to me."
Amelia stopped glaring at Patrick and turned to look at Owen instead. She said politely, "Mr. Owen, please continue."
Owen said slowly, "For the sake of my proposal and grandpa's happiness, I would like to ask Miss Ramsay to cooperate with me and put on a show."
Amelia frowned and questioned, "Does Mr. Owen really want me to be old Mr. Hopper's adopted granddaughter? This is too comical of a proposal!"
Owen replied honestly, "Miss Ramsay, first of all, I have to make it clear to you that I am absolutely on your side, I will never defraud you!"
"Really?" Amelia was very suspicious.
Owen looked at her with some disappointment. "When have I ever lied to you?"
Amelia was silent. Not only had Owen not lied to her, but he had also helped her a lot, both publicly and privately.
It could be said that Owen was the first person she met who did not ask for anything in return and who did not have any ulterior motives towards her.
As she thought of this, Amelia let out a sigh of relief. "Mr. Owen, how would you want me to cooperate with your acting?"
A flash of joy flitted across Owen's eyes, but it did not last long.
In the next second, he explained slowly, "After you go into the ward, pretend to agree with gramps' request, just call him 'gramps'..."
"Wait a minute!" Before Owen could finish his sentence, he was interrupted by Patrick. "Owen, you will only end up in an awkward situation if you do this! If Amelia agrees to accept this offer, she won't be able to avoid any familial obligations in the future!"
Owen's expression was the same as ever as he added on, "Patrick, all our familial obligations are just a sense of formality. The Hopper Family's blood relatives have all been recorded in the genealogy. Miss Ramsay's surname isn't the same as ours, so she wouldn't be included. Ultimately, she still has nothing to do with the Hopper Family."
"The genealogical record of the Hopper Family? What's that?" Amelia asked subconsciously.
Owen revealed an embarrassed expression. "This record...is a record only for the Hoppers. From our grandmother to mother, Nora and you as Patrick's wife were not included in this list. You don't have to take any offence about this because this is a rule made by the Hopper Family's ancestors. We can only follow it."
Amelia said faintly, "I don't mind."
What was the point of divorcing Patrick then?
"Then...are you agreeing to it?" Owen looked at her expectantly.
It was only gramps' blood pressure that was bad, but according to Owen, it seemed like gramps was suffering from cancer instead!
Owen's sharp eyes seemed to be able to see through human mind. "Can't you see that grandpa's blood pressure isn't the real issue here, but the real problem lies with his heart! There's definitely a cure for high blood pressure, but for psychological issue, it's more to incurable!"
The unpleasant feeling lingered in Patrick's mind for a moment.
Owen looked at him and continued, "Whoever started all this mess should be the one to end it. However, if you're with grandpa, you'll only anger him further. The best person for this will definitely be Miss Ramsay!"
Amelia hesitated for a moment and suggested, "How about this, Mr. Owen? I'll pretend to call old Mr. Hopper 'gramps' first, and coax him a little so that he'll be happy. I personally think that to make it official with the family is still too formal, it would be a trouble in the future. Please help me find an excuse to escape from this."
Upon hearing this, Patrick was moved by this idea. From the bottom of his heart, he also felt that this was a good idea of killing two birds with one stone.
"Sure, leave it to me." Owen patted his chest as a sign of assurance.
Amelia gave a long sigh of relief. She was willing to help. On one hand, it was because of Gramps Hopper, and on the other hand, Alice's words still rang clearly in her ears.
Alice had advised Amelia to only keep her and Patrick's relationship within themselves. If she offended such an important person such as Gramps Hopper, then it would be probable that Amelia and Apex Construction Corporation would not be able to improve their business in Northville in the long run.
Was it just to call old Mr. Hopper 'gramps'? She would just call him that then! Anyway, it was just an act!
As for Patrick, she would be mocked by him at worst!
With this thought in mind, Amelia said softly to Owen, "Then, Mr. Owen... I'll go in now, and let's start the act?"
