Kimberley's expression changed when she heard that Amelia's father was admitted to the hospital. "What? I'm so sorry, I didn't know. What happened?"
Amelia smiled. "Kimberley, you don't have to be. You've just arrived in Northville a month ago. You probably haven't heard of things that happened in Northville."
"Besides, you have never met my father, it's normal that you don't recognize him. A few months ago, my father...well, he had a stroke and he hasn't woken up yet since then.
But isn't it strange that I never met you although I have visited the hospital so frequently?"
Amelia would not blame Kimberley at all, after all, they were just classmates. It was natural that Kimberley did not know that Amelia's father was admitted.
Kimberley was also puzzled. "I'm usually in the morning shift. What time do you usually visit your dad?"
Amelia nodded and said, "I see, I usually get off work around six in the evening. By the time I reach here at the hospital, your shift would have finished."
While they were chatting, Patrick suddenly walked out of Shawn's ward.
He looked around and finally fixed his eyes on Amelia and Kimberley.
Kimberley held her breath as he saw Patrick's face. He was so handsome that it was not possible for anyone to not fall in love with him at first glance.
Amelia could not help but ask, "Why are you here? Is there something wrong with Shawn?"
Patrick's mood went through a U-turn as he heard how Amelia was so concerned about someone else instead of him.
He tried his best to console himself with the excuse that she was just caring about her savior. After a while, he then said, "Don't worry, Shawn has fallen asleep. I've just come to tell you that Aunt Alice is awake."
Amelia's eyes widened. "How did you know that she's awake?"
Patrick said lightly, "Considering what Brittany did earlier, I was afraid that she would continue to cause trouble. So, I asked a nurse to guard Aunt Alice's ward and call me if anything happened."
Amelia heard what Patrick said and immediately felt ashamed. "Why didn't I think of it?"
How could she say she was Alice's family if she did not even think of this at all.
Patrick glanced at her and said sarcastically, "You have all your attention on Shawn, how would you have spare time to care for others?"
Amelia's face turned pale from embarrassment.
"Haha, I think I smell jealousy." Kimberley whispered into Amelia's ear.
Amelia pursed her lips. Kimberley might have misunderstood. Patrick was clearly mocking her for caring about Shawn more than her own family but the situation was chaotic and Shawn was injured because of her. She had really lost her mind.
Patrick could not help but to narrow his eyes seeing how Kimberley and Amelia were very close.
Amelia could treat a high school classmate that she had not seen for a long with such gentleness, but when it comes to Patrick...
Just as Patrick was about to lose his temper, Amelia turned to him and smiled gratefully at him. "Thank you for thinking about Aunt Alice for me."
Patrick looked at her smile and he felt that he had not seen it in a lifetime.
From when they were divorced until now, he could count the times when Amelia had let out a smile.
If she treated everyone the same way, he would not say a single thing. But she treated everyone with kindness and laughter. It was obvious that she was going against him, how could he accept this!
Kimberley then asked, "Amelia, who is Aunt Alice?"
However, Kimberley insisted, "No! She's your stepmother, I must go and pay my respect to her."
Just as Amelia was about to agree, Patrick said faintly, "Ms. Young, I have a question for you."
Kimberley met his eyes and looked at him in awe. "Just ask as you please, Mr. Patrick."
Patrick curled his lips and asked with a sneer, "Are you trying to please Amelia just to get closer to Kaiden?"
Kimberley's pupils shrank and she argued loudly, "Mr. Patrick, Amelia and I were classmates in high school. Now that we've reunited, what makes you think that I would care about Mr. Wright when I don't even understand what Amelia's family is going through at the moment?"
Amelia did not expect Patrick to ask such a question! When she reacted, she hurriedly calmed Kimberley who was panting. "Kimberley, don't listen to him. He loves talking nonsense. I apologize to you on his behalf."
"It's nothing..." Kimberley forced a smile and said, "In order to avoid suspicion, I think I better go back to work. We should get in touch when we're free."
"Kimberley!" Amelia shouted with frustration as she looked at Kimberley's back that left hastily.
Patrick laughed and said, "She's so soft-hearted, did I just blow her cover?"
Amelia's chest heaved heavily. She turned and glared at Patrick. She gritted her teeth and asked, "Patrick, what's wrong with you? Why did you drive my friend away?"
Patrick raised his eyebrows and said, "If she has no ulterior motives, why would she be in such a hurry
to leave?"
Amelia explained, "Kimberley is a very sensitive person. She couldn't pay her fees because her father was a gambler back when she was in high school. When we helped her, she would smile brightly and accept our offer. But in fact, she would hide in the bathroom and cried secretly.
You should understand what I'm saying, right? However, you like to distort others' good intentions into schemes and tricks. You're simply just paranoid!"
