Jarvy's mood could be imagined when he saw his parents' smiles freeze.
But thinking of Maryanne's uncompromising personality, he could only come forward and explain himself. "Dad, Mom, Maryanne's hand was accidentally injured before. She's very pitiful. Don't think too much about it."
Upon hearing this, Keefe and Simone recovered from their shock and shook Maryanne's hand. However, for some unknown reason, they quickly loosened their grip on the tip of her fingers and did not even touch the back of her hand.
Maryanne laughed deep down. It seemed like not only Jarvy, but even his parents could not accept her flaws.
"Mr. and Mrs. Tomson, it's my first time to meet you, but I didn't buy you any gifts. I'm really sorry."
These were nice words, but when coupled with Maryanne's remorseless face, they sounded weird.
Jarvy had been driving absent-mindedly just now. He even forgot to think about buying a gift. But forget it, he didn't really like Maryanne anyway.
Even though he thought so, he still had to take responsibility. "Dad, Mom, this is not Maryanne's fault. I told her not to spend too much."
Seeing that his son had protected her so well, Keefe and Simone didn't say anything.
"Miss Maryanne Smith, please come and have dinner."
"All right."
Maryanne took her bag and threw it into Jarvy's arms. She said casually as if she was giving instructions to a lackey, "Help me hang up my bag."
Jarvy endured for a while. Without asking the servants to help, he personally went to hang the bag for Maryanne.
Keefe and Simone saw that his son didn't feel anything after being ordered. For a moment, their moods were very complicated.
Maryanne turned to look at them. "Mr. and Mrs. Tomson, didn't you ask me to come to the table and have dinner? Why are you still standing there?"
Simone blurted out, "We're waiting for Jarvy."
Maryanne's eyes widened in surprise. "You're elders. Why wait for him? Besides, this is his house. Doesn't he know where the dining table is?"
Keefe and Simone thought thought she was too insensible.
Maryanne, however, did not seem to know how to observe the situation. She simply stared at them. Luckily, Jarvy came back very quickly and broke their silence. "Alright, let's eat."
At the dinner table—
Maryanne was always up to no good. First, she thought that the soup was too salty. Then, she thought that the meat was too old, causing his parents, who had specially prepared the dishes on the table, to feel a little embarrassed.
However, they were all well-educated people. They could not say words like "Don't eat it if it's not good". In order to calm Maryanne's mood, Simone personally picked up a garlic abalone for her.
As a result, Maryanne frowned at the garlic on top of the abalone. "Oh, there's so much garlic. Take it back, Mrs. Tomson. I don't eat it."
How could Simone really take it back? How would it look?
"Miss Maryanne Smith, I will teach you a method. You can pick up the garlic and just eat the abalone."
Maryanne covered her nose and said, "But I can't stand the smell of garlic on the abalone."
As Maryanne covered her nose, Simone saw the back of her hand and her appetite immediately dropped.
"Give it to me." At this moment, Jarvy, who was sitting beside Maryanne, suddenly spoke in a low voice.
"Alright, I'll give it to you." Maryanne had a bright smile on her face as she placed the abalone in the air above Jarvy's rice bowl. She threw it downwards accurately. Even the garlic was sent flying.
The Tomson family stopped talking and Maryanne was the only one who apologized. "Oh my! I'm sorry. I didn't expect this.”
"It doesn't matter!" It was unclear how Jarvy had managed to say these three words. Right now, all he wanted to do was to force Maryanne to open her mouth and shove all the food she disliked into it so that she could have a good taste!
After this lesson, Simone no longer dared to pick up any food for Maryanne. She didn't even mention which dish was delicious, lest Maryanne answered her back.
After the meal-
Jarvy's family had completely exhausted the energy that the food brought them as if they had just fought a tough battle.
As for Maryanne, she only ate a little in order to maintain the image that made people hate her.
To be honest, the dishes prepared by the Tomson family were quite good. Still, she preferred Aunt Sierra's culinary skills.
When she thought of Aunt Sierra, it was inevitable that she would think of Milton. She hadn't answered his call for such a long time. He must be angry.
Just as Maryanne was lost in her thoughts, she heard a low shout. "Maryanne!"
"Ah?" She exclaimed and looked at the one who made the sound.
Jarvy seemed to be a little unhappy. "My father is asking you a question."
Maryanne immediately looked at Jarvy's father and asked, "Mr. Tomson, what's the matter?"
"How did Miss Maryanne Smith and my son meet?" asked Keefe.
Maryanne replied, "Oh, my brother introduced him to me."
Jarvy added from the side, "I'm a friend of Maryanne's brother."
Keefe nodded. "Then how far have you reached?"
He said, "No, I like your straightforward attitude." But now, he could not say such words anymore.
He even lost the strength to disguise himself.
It was quite a terrible thing that the dignity of a man was destroyed. However, Jarvy's dignity was destroyed since he began to pursue Maryanne.
Had it not been for the freshness brought by Maryanne's beauty and the one-million-dollar bet that supported him in the beginning, he would have gone ballistic long ago.
Now, Maryanne's beauty had been tarnished because of her hand. Her character was like a fishbone stuck in his throat, making it difficult for him to swallow it. Other than the one million dollars bet, Jarvy could not find any other fun.
Instead, he was fooled by her like a fool. It was too disgraceful.
Maryanne saw that he could not speak for a long time and could not help but ask, "If there's nothing else, shouldn't we go in?"
"Maryanne," Jarvy finally said, "I think we'd better calm down first."
Maryanne was stunned. "What do you mean?"
"That's..." Jarvy looked as if it was difficult to say it out. He made a "separate" gesture with his hands.
Maryanne understood and asked, "You want me to leave now?"
Jarvy glanced at her and said euphemistically, "I will send you back to the hotel."
Maryanne's pretty face gradually turned serious. "So, are you driving me away?"
Jarvy tried to maintain his gentlemanly manner as much as possible. "No, just treat it
as a request."
"Alright then." Maryanne agreed reluctantly.
"Thank you." Jarvy heaved a sigh of relief. "I'll go in and grab the car keys. Wait for me."
The next second, when he saw Maryanne following him, Jarvy's nerves tightened again. Maybe his expression was too obvious, Maryanne said to him, "I'm not going to pester you, I just want to take back my bag."
Hearing this, Jarvy once again felt embarrassed. He braced himself and replied, "That's not what I meant."
After the two of them returned to the house, Jarvy sent the servant to get his car keys and Maryanne's bag in order to prevent Maryanne from telling anything shocking to his parents. He, on the other hand, kept his eyes on her.
She said—
"Mr. and Mrs. Tomson, thank you so much for your hospitality tonight. I had a great time, but good times are always short. I'm going back to the hotel now. See you next time."
