"What are you guys doing?” Maryanne first asked, then noticed the crutch on the ground and Hobart's clenched fists. Meanwhile, her lover was leaning against the wall, looking utterly helpless.
Her heart ached, and she quickly picked up the crutch from the ground and returned it to Milton. Then, she looked at Hobart with tears in her eyes. "Brother! You promised not to fight him!”
"Maryanne, I swear that he was the one who attacked me first!" Hobart quickly turned his face away, allowing Maryanne to see the scars on his face. "Look, isn't it all red?"
Maryanne glanced at him and said, contrary to her will, "You were the one to complain first, it's not even red! You were clenching your fists. If I hadn't appeared in time, you would've already hit him!"
"I!" Hobart held his breath and felt the pain.
He wanted to check his face in the mirror to see if it was red or not.
Maryanne said, "Brother, I'll repeat this again. It was Milton who saved me. If you hit him, you are returning kindness with ingratitude! Or, in your heart, you wanted me to have sex with Jarvy so that he can be your real brother-in-law?"
Hobart said anxiously, "Maryanne, I've never thought this way!"
"Then prove it to me! Jarvy is now at the police station. You go! You go and help me get justice!" Maryanne's voice rose due to agitation, and her momentum increased sharply.
*
Hobart had left.
Maryanne immediately breathed a sigh of relief and then looked at Milton with a tone of waiting for praise. "Dear, what do you think of my performance?"
Milton touched her nose and smiled. "Thank you for your hard work. You've put on such a good show."
Maryanne stuck out her tongue and said, "By the way, you beat my brother really hard just now. I could hear you even when I was lying inside, but I thought..."
Milton chimed in, "Did you think your brother was hitting me, so you rushed out in such a hurry?"
"Yes." Maryanne caressed her chest. "Luckily, you’re not the one to be beaten.”
Milton asked seriously, "Aren't you angry that I beat your brother?"
Maryanne shook her head. “I'm not angry. You should strike back like this. Otherwise, he'll only think of you as easy to bully."
Milton said in a playful tone, "Who told me not to have a frontal conflict with him before?"
Maryanne replied wryly, "It's me! You were seriously injured then, how could I bear to let you fight him head-on? Now that your injuries have mostly recovered and you've saved me, we naturally have more confidence in fighting him!"
Milton nodded in agreement. "Well... it seems to make sense." "Is that so?" Maryanne, who had been praised, could not hold back her smile. The haze that she had previously experienced at Jarvy's place seemed to have been cleared in an instant.
Milton couldn't help but laugh. He immediately said, "Alright, go back to bed and rest."
"Okay." Maryanne followed him obediently and returned to the ward.
Seeing Maryanne lying down with her walnutlike swollen eyes staring at him, Milton could not help but ask, "Don't you want to sleep?" Maryanne said from the bottom of her heart, "It's rare that no one bothers us anymore. I can't bear to sleep."
Milton paused for a moment before nodding. "That's true."
"Dear," Maryanne suddenly stretched out her hand and hooked the little finger of Milton, saying nervously, "I have never been touched by Jarvy and the others. Even my mouth was bitten by myself. It has nothing to do with them!"
Milton couldn't help but bent down and looked at her, "I know, you don't have to explain."
"It's you!" Maryanne cried out in a low voice and looked at Milton in confusion.
After all, the relationship between the four of them had once been very awkward.
Milton came to his senses and asked, "Amelia, why are you here?"
At the same time, Patrick put down his hand that covered Amelia's eyes.
After glancing at Patrick, Amelia turned to Milton and Maryanne and said, "I heard that something had happened to Maryanne, so I asked Mr. Hopper to bring me here. Is there any problem?"
Milton thought for a moment and said, "I'd better go out and tell you."
"Alright." Amelia nodded. After all, they were discussing this matter in front of the victim, which could possibly make her feel bad again.
Maryanne watched Milton walk out with a crutch. Her heart was filled with warmth. He must have seen through her embarrassment in front of Patrick and his wife, so he took them away.
Outside the ward.
Milton sincerely thanked Patrick, "Thank you. You and your brother really acted in time!"
Patrick nodded to show that he didn't need to worry about it.
There was always no need to express that much between men.
Milton then looked at Amelia and said, "Nothing serious happened. You didn't have to come here personally."
