Panicked, she yelled, “Why should we get a divorce? I don’t want that, William! I’ve lost the child, anyway. Can’t you just pretend it never happened? What’s more, hasn’t Rachel been in your heart all this time? Can’t you just forget that this ever happened?”
William laughed out loud as though he had heard a joke.
“What did you just say?”
He chuckled.
“Samantha, what do you take the Lewis family for? Do you really think just about anyone can be part of it? Everyone in the Lloyd family was present at the funeral. Now, they all know that I can’t bear children and that you’ve made a cuckold out of me. Do you really think we can pretend nothing happened?”
Samantha started to panic even more. Tears started falling once again. She tugged pitifully at William’s sleeve and began to plead.
“William, I really love you. Think about it! If I didn’t, why would I try to drink my sorrows away? That accident wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t gotten drunk.”
If she hadn’t slept with another man, she would probably never have realized that William was infertile. Given what she knew of the Lewis family, she would have been blamed for their inability to bear a child and would have been the target of ridicule.
William looked irritably at Samantha.
“Can you quit saying things like that? Hearing it disgusts me, do you know that? Things between us have come to this point. How could you even talk about love between us? What’s the point of forcing ourselves to be with each other?”
Samantha could see the determination in William’s eyes. He was bent on divorcing her and wasn’t just saying it casually.
She stood up from the bench and gave up all attempts to plead with him.
Instead, she demanded angrily, “Don’t think I don’t know what’s going on in your head. You’ve wanted to divorce me for a long time, right? You just want to be with Rachel once we’re separated.”
“What nonsense are you spouting? Since when did I say that I wanted to be with Rachel? Samantha, watch your words. We’re talking about us. You’d better get that straight!” William yelled.
He looked cautiously at Tyler as he spoke.
Tyler simply sat where he was, texting someone with his phone in silence, seemingly not paying any

William heaved a sigh of relief.
