Dan arched an eyebrow at Carroll, giving him a sidelong glance. “You looking for me?”
Carroll nodded. “Yeah.”
There was no mistaking it—why else would Carroll be tracking him down?
Dan’s gaze dropped, his whole demeanor turning colder as memories of that mess back in Ferrowland’s capital with Yvonne flooded back.
He let out a heavy sigh. “Isn’t she supposed to be with her mother’s daughter?”
Carroll shrugged. “Not sure what she wants with you.”
“Where is she now?”
“At the airport.”
“Let her know where I am.”
Carroll hesitated. “But she—”
He trailed off, clearly uneasy. Right now, Yvonne was acting like a woman possessed where Dan was concerned—every time they met, it was all claws and fury. Frankly, she was the last person Dan needed to see.
But Dan’s icy glare silenced any further protest. Carroll swallowed whatever he was about to say and headed off to pass along Dan’s whereabouts.
Left alone, Dan’s eyes darkened, emotions swirling beneath the surface.
“So she’s coming herself this time… Good.”
He didn’t really care why she was coming. All he knew was that if Yvonne didn’t seek him out now, he might not get another chance to see her for a long, long time.
Thinking about how Yvonne always flew off the handle whenever she saw him now, Dan stood and walked over to a cabinet. He opened it and pulled out a box—inside, a collection of expensive cigars.
He took one out, clipped the end, and set it smoldering in a heavy glass ashtray shaped like a peacock.
Then he sat back at his desk, fished out a bottle of pills from the drawer, and popped one.

Meanwhile, Yvonne got Dan’s exact location in no time.
She barreled over there, all fire and fury, with Chloe by her side. Chloe, ever the careful one, scanned the castle’s perimeter with binoculars.
“No one around?” she asked, surprised.
All the anger Yvonne had bottled up on the way over burst out at once. But this time, Dan was ready. He rolled his chair out of the way just in time, dodging her attack.
Yvonne was livid. She lunged at him. “Where the hell did you hide Susanna?!”
Just the mention of Susanna made Yvonne see red—she swung at Dan even harder.
But Dan was prepared this time. He wasn’t about to let Yvonne beat him to a pulp like last time. Knowing she’d come at him with everything she had, he met her blow for blow.
When she demanded to know about Susanna, Dan’s expression turned grim. “Susanna’s missing? I didn’t take her.”
“Liar!”
Yvonne’s temper exploded. She punched harder, desperation and rage fueling her.
Even with Dan on guard, she managed to land a few solid hits—his face, already bruised from their last encounter, started swelling up again.
But as the scuffle wore on, Yvonne suddenly felt her strength fading. All that anger she’d been carrying seemed to evaporate, leaving her weak and lightheaded.
After a few more rounds, Dan managed to pin her against the desk. “Enough. I told you, I didn’t take her.”
Yvonne lashed out, grabbing at him. “If it wasn’t you, then who? No one else has ever screwed me over the way you have, Dan!”
