Susanna clutched the collar of her hoodie, awkwardly turning away. “I was actually planning to go see my mom at Black Gate today.”
She was really shaken up after what Hull had put her through.
If she had to get into a fight right now, the first thing she’d notice was how much her legs hurt.
All Yvonne had been teaching her these past weeks was basically how to run for her life.
And now, thanks to Hull, her legs felt like someone else’s. If she had to make a run for it, there was no way she’d get away.
She’d have to stand her ground and fight.
When Susanna mentioned visiting her mom at Black Gate, Hull’s expression shifted for a split second.
“You’re heading to Black Gate?” he asked.
Susanna nodded. “Yeah.”
Why had she started training with Yvonne in the first place? It was all because she wanted to go back to Black Gate and help her mom.
After twenty brutal days by Yvonne’s side, Susanna realized she wasn’t as afraid of the chaos swirling around her mom anymore.
The worst thing in a suffocating situation? Fear.
Somehow, in just those few weeks, Yvonne had managed to knock that fear right out of her.
Now, all that was left was to dive in and see what she could pull off.
Hull frowned, pouring her a glass of milk and handing it over. “You shouldn’t go to Black Gate just yet.”
“Huh?”
Hull explained, “I’ve already sent some of my people to help your mom. Things are under control there now—your mom’s in a strong position.”
Susanna stared. “Wait, you sent people to help my mom? And things are actually stable now?”
Black Gate was notorious for being a mess. The idea that it was now under control was almost laughable.
Hull just looked at her. “What?”
Susanna fell silent, meeting his usually icy gaze, which now seemed a little softer. She hesitated. “Why are you helping me so much?”
Their original deal had only been that he’d help her see her mother. But now he’d sent his own people to help her mom out.
Was this… above and beyond? Or was there something else going on? Especially considering how he’d been all over her since yesterday—it was like he was paying himself back in a completely different way.
Susanna gave Hull a weird look.
Hull frowned. “What’s with that look?”
Susanna coughed awkwardly, mumbling, “You… you don’t happen to like me, do you?”
Hull: “???”
Hull’s expression returned to his usual sternness.
“Finish your breakfast and get changed. Meet me at the beach.”
Susanna groaned. “Again? What for?”
“Don’t feel like training anymore?” He shot her a look before striding out of the room.
Susanna was left gaping. He’d gone through all this trouble to get her away from Yvonne, and now he wanted to train her himself?
What a hassle.
Her heart thumped nervously, especially after seeing the look on Hull’s face before he left. Was he even tougher than Yvonne?
Yvonne’s training methods were already torture.
“I’m still recovering, you know,” Susanna grumbled under her breath.
Not that Hull heard her—he was already out the door.
These last twenty days, Susanna had been genuinely traumatized by training, especially with how dead-serious Yvonne always was.
She’d tried to quit and flop on the floor more than once.
But Yvonne always had some way to get her back up and keep her going.
