But she forced herself to swallow her anger.
“Three days. I’ll do my best to find her, okay?”
Yvonne stood up. “Fine. Three days. Bring her to me.”
Adelle said she’d try, but Yvonne just assumed she would deliver.
Wasn’t that the same as saying Adelle had taken her?
Xander stood up as well, slipping his shiny silver knife back into his pocket. He wrapped an arm around Yvonne and started leading her out.
As they walked, Yvonne called back, “Adelle, remember—she’d better be completely unharmed, not a single scratch. Got it?”
Adelle: “…”
Derek: “…”
Completely unharmed? They hadn’t even caught a glimpse of Susanna. Where were they supposed to find her, let alone guarantee she was untouched?
They left.
Derek was so angry his chest hurt. “Why did you agree to that? We don’t even have her!”
Adelle said, “We had to keep her calm. You saw who she brought—Mr. Schultz was with her, and Miguel’s coming too.”
Just mentioning Hull made their heads ache more.
Everyone was showing up, and Black Gate was already in chaos from all the power shifts lately. Things were barely holding together.
Now Lacey was back in the mix!
With these outside forces showing up… how much of Black Gate’s resources could they even hope to hold on to?
“Ask Finch if he’s the one who took her,” Derek snapped.
Adelle frowned. “Finch? I thought… wasn’t it Dan?”
Hearing Derek wanted her to check with Finch, Adelle’s tone sharpened with annoyance.
Derek said, “Dan’s already come after me twice today about the girl.”
Adelle: “…”
So Finch was the only one left?
He’d never doubted her and Finch before—why now?
The thought twisted painfully in Adelle’s chest.
So, he’d brought muscle to demand what he wanted?
“This is Litamark!” Derek ground out through clenched teeth.
This wasn’t even their turf.
When had Black Gate gotten so weak that outsiders dared to show up and throw their weight around? Did they want to be any more arrogant?
Leroy: “…”
Seeing Derek’s anger, Leroy dropped his head, not daring to say another word.
Just then, Derek’s phone rang.
He answered, voice cold and clipped: “Talk.”
“Sir, Lottie says… she’s got her eyes on Slatepeak Mines.”
“What does that mean?” Derek’s tone was black as thunder.
On the other end: “She means—she wants it.”
Derek: “…”
