Chapter 197: The Truth

Callum’s POV

After Hailee walked away, I turned to Montana. My anger burned hot in my chest. The joke was on her for ever thinking I would marry her. Even if Hailee didn’t exist, I would never settle for a spoiled bitch like Montana. I would never curse my unborn children with a mother as spiteful as she was. Never.

"There is no engagement," I growled. My voice shook the room. "Stop lying."

Montana lifted her chin, her eyes flashing. "Your father gave me this ring. The council agreed. That makes me yours."

I laughed, but it was sharp and cold. "A ring forced on your finger means nothing. My word is law. And I never gave it to you."

Her face turned red with rage. "You can’t shame me like this. My father—"

"I don’t care about your father!" I snapped, slamming my hand against the wall. She jumped at the sound. "You will never be my Luna. Not now, not ever."

Her lips trembled, but her eyes still burned. "I won’t lose you. Not to her."

I snarled. "You never had me, Montana, and you will never have me."

Her frown deepened as she stepped closer. "Do you know how many men want me?" she said, spinning a little so I could see her. "I am beautiful. I have a name. I have power. If you won’t take me, I can go to any of them. I will not beg you."

I shrugged. "Then go," I said. "Go to them."

Her glare hardened more. She leaned forward, very close, and her voice went cold. "I am not letting go of you, Callum... never... everyone knows I am your wife-to-be. You can’t disgrace me. Instead of me becoming a subject of mockery, I will make that bitch disappear."

Something in me snapped. I moved so fast that before she knew it, I had grabbed her neck. Her eyes flew wide in shock as she clawed at my grip. "How dare you!" I yelled. My voice shook the room. "You dare to threaten me." I spat and swiftly let go of her before I did something I would regret.

"Guards!" I called.

Two warriors rushed in.

"Take her away," I ordered. "And don’t let her near me again."

Montana’s face twisted in shock. "You’ll regret this!" she screamed as the guards dragged her out. "I won’t lose you, Callum!"

My hands still shook from the urge to crush her throat. I couldn’t stay in that room — not with her scent clinging to me, not with my wolf pacing restlessly inside me. I needed to clear my head.

I walked out to the combat grounds. The sound of training filled the air—shouts, laughter, the clash of wooden swords.

And then I saw them.

Her boys.

Oscar, standing firm with his sword. Ozzy, watching every move before he struck. But Oliver...

Oliver caught my eyes and held them.

He swung his sword with strength far too great for a boy of ten. His stance was bold, steady. He moved with focus, with speed. My chest tightened as I watched him.

My wolf froze.

Mine.

The word shook through me like thunder.

Oliver switched hands, blocking a strike with his left. My breath caught. He was better with his left hand—just like me. Everyone once said it was a weakness, but I had made it my strength.

And now... he fought the same way.
