She stood up, her eyes drifting around the room until they landed on the obvious bulge under the man’s loose hospital gown. Her cheeks flared hot again.
She cleared her throat, voice barely above a whisper. “Uh… maybe wait a bit before coming out.”
If anyone saw him like this, who knew what they’d think—he’d look like a complete creep.
The man glanced down, following her gaze, and let out a helpless sigh. He rubbed his brow, then turned and sat back down on the hospital bed.
Emmy hurried to the door but only cracked it open just enough to slip through. She slid out and quickly shut it behind her.
Out in the hallway, Dean’s eyes zeroed in on the pale skin of her neck.
A fresh red mark stood out, a glaring clue about what had just gone down in that room.
Dean’s eyes narrowed and his voice came out tight with anger. “James is in there too? What were you doing?”
Emmy lifted her fingers to the mark, brushing over it. She tilted her chin, defiant.
If James wanted to leave a mark, then she’d let everyone see it.
She smirked. “Isn’t it obvious?”
Dean’s face went dark with jealousy and rage. He grabbed Emmy’s wrist.
“Come with me.”
He dragged her down the hall to the balcony at the end. Only when they were outside did he finally let her go, his eyes cold as ice.
“Emmy, don’t you have any self-respect?”
She let out a sharp laugh. “Why would I need self-respect when I’m with my husband?”
That shut him up for a beat. Dean’s breathing stuttered, his eyes blazing.
But he forced himself to hold back. He had another reason for coming here.
He slammed his foot into the wall, then pulled out a pack of cigarettes, lighting one with shaking hands. Smoke curled around his tense, shadowed face.
Emmy wrinkled her nose and stepped away, moving to the far side of the balcony, into the breeze.
She hated the smell of cigarettes.
He’d even quit for her once, because she couldn’t stand it.
At some point, he’d started up again.
“Evelina didn’t steal your Dome project,” Dean said, blowing out a cold stream of smoke. “She got a similar framework a year ago, but your dad gave it to her. He told her to improve the system and sent her to Starlight to compete with you. Until today, she had no idea the source code for Skyline System came from your Dome.”
