James stared at her flushed face for a long moment, confusion flickering in his deep eyes before something finally clicked. His eyes widened.
“Shit.”
The word slipped out as he suddenly jumped off her. It was the first time Emmy had ever heard him curse, and she just sat there, stunned.
He perched at the edge of the bed, completely bare, his broad back facing her. His chest rose and fell in quick, uneven breaths. There was something about his tense shoulders, the way he seemed to hold himself back, that made Emmy feel a strange mix of guilt and heartache for him.
She hesitated, then reached out and lightly poked his back. “Um… if you want, I can use my hand?”
It wasn’t like she hadn’t done it before. Worst case, she could always pretend to faint again.
James went completely still. Then he whipped around, eyes dark with desire, locking her in place with his gaze. The next second, he scooped her up and set her on his lap, straddling his thigh. He took her hand in his, guiding her.
Emmy went quiet. Maybe she could still get away with pretending to faint?
...
Let’s just say, a lot happened that night.
...
The next morning, Emmy woke up sore all over. She reached for her phone, only to realize her hand was so weak she could barely hold it. Just remembering how relentless James had been last night sent a shiver down her spine.
Suddenly, she remembered something and sat up abruptly, eyes darting to the bedsheet beneath her. Sure enough, there was a faint patch of red.
She threw off the covers and dashed to the bathroom.
James must’ve heard the commotion, because he showed up at the door. He was wearing a silk robe, the belt hanging loose around his waist, looking all elegant and aloof. For a second, Emmy felt like she was seeing the untouchable Mr. Nelson again.
She paused only a moment before slipping into the bathroom and shutting the door.
James had definitely noticed the stain on her nightgown. He walked over and knocked on the door. “Need any help?”
“No! I’m fine!” Emmy blurted, then added in a much softer voice, “Um… could you buy me some period underwear?”
