The man skimmed through the contract, barely pausing before grabbing the pen and signing his name. As if on cue, the waiter started setting dishes on the table. He closed the contract, slid it back into its leather folder, and set it aside, looking completely unfazed—like getting company shares was just another Tuesday for him.
Emmy couldn’t help staring at him, confused. Wasn’t he supposed to be excited? At least a little happy? Most people would be over the moon, but he didn’t show a hint of emotion.
Suddenly, he shrugged off his jacket and tossed it over the back of the chair next to her. Without warning, he dragged the chair over and sat right by her side. Under the table, his big hand slid around her waist and pulled her closer.
He was all heat and confidence and that intoxicating scent she was starting to recognize as pure James. His breath was so warm on her ear it made her skin tingle.
“If you keep looking at me like that, I won’t get any work done,” he murmured.
Emmy blurted out, “What work could I possibly be distracting you from?”
He leaned in, his voice dropping even lower, a crooked grin tugging at his lips. “I’ll end up dragging you upstairs. To a hotel room.”
Her face flamed red, burning all the way up to her ears. This man—he really didn’t care about embarrassing either of them.
She ducked her head, grabbed her fork, and started shoveling food into her mouth, barely tasting anything. The rest of the meal was a blur. Her mind was a mess, and her cheeks never cooled off, not even for a second.
She was starting to notice a pattern: whenever she and James were alone, he always found a way to say something so outrageous she wanted to disappear on the spot. And yet, as soon as he turned away and joined his firefighter buddies, it was like watching a switch flip.
His posture straightened, his steps became purposeful, and suddenly he had this powerful, unshakable energy. He looked like someone who could take on the world—a real-life hero. If she hadn’t seen his teasing, shameless side up close, Emmy would have sworn there were two different men: the James who flirted at dinner and the James who commanded respect with just his presence.
After leaving the mall, Emmy headed straight to the law office. She finished notarizing the share transfer, then told Mr. Polland, “If there’s anything about these shares in the future, just come to me. No need to bother my husband.”
James was still her husband, at least on paper. When Cooper married her mom, even he got five percent of Starlight Corporation’s shares from her grandfather. She wasn’t about to treat James unfairly.
