Dean didn’t say another word.
The air in the car grew so heavy and tense it felt like time stopped. Emmy almost thought he’d fallen asleep when he finally broke the silence.
“I’ll find out what happened. If it turns out Evelina and her daughter set you up—got you into Mr. Nelson’s bed on purpose—I’ll make sure they pay for it.”
His hand, resting on his knee, had curled into a tight fist. His knuckles were white, his whole arm trembling.
No one could possibly know just how much he hated the person who started all this.
Emmy was the girl he’d spoiled since she was little. He couldn’t even picture her in someone else’s arms, let alone accept it. The thought of her giving herself to another man made his stomach twist.
If she’d chosen this for herself, he’d only feel disappointed, maybe disgusted.
But if she’d been tricked...
Dean couldn’t even imagine what he’d do to the one responsible. Even if that person was Evelina.
No one gets to hurt the woman he’s spent his life protecting.
The car rolled to a stop in front of Nelson Tower, all glass and steel, reaching up into the clouds.
Emmy didn’t look back at Dean, not even for a second. She pushed open the door and stepped out.
The bodyguard in the backseat hopped out right after her, falling in at her side.
Suddenly, the car window slid down, and Dean’s face appeared—stormy, eyes dark.
“Emmy, don’t get too close to Mr. Nelson. I’ll be waiting here.”
Emmy halted mid-step.
The longer she thought about it, the angrier she got. She spun on her heel and marched back to the window, her gaze sharp and mocking.
“Dean, you’re something else. You tell me not to get close to Mr. Nelson, then turn around and want me to go beg him to let Evelina go?”
She scoffed. “Why don’t you go save your precious Evelina yourself?”
Dean’s brows drew together, pain flickering in his eyes.
“I tried. I took people, spent money—I even tried to force my way in. But Shadow Core is locked up tight. You know how things are between me and Mr. Nelson. Only you have a shot.”
He looked desperate now. “Just this once, Emmy. Please?”
Emmy let out a cold laugh, then—probably for the first time in her life—swore at him. “You’re such an idiot.”
Without waiting for a reply, she turned and walked toward Nelson Tower, not bothering to look back.
