His pupils shrank and his brows drew together, dark and tense.

Emmy didn’t even notice the sudden storm brewing on his face. All she wanted now was to get far away from this suffocating tension.

Hugging the suit jacket she’d accidentally stained, she hurried out.

The bodyguard kept right by her side, shielding her as they walked.

Dean saw her and rushed over, barely able to hide his worry. “What took you so long? How did it go?”

Only then did Emmy glance at her phone. It was already past eight.

She answered, calm and cool. “Mr. Nelson agreed.”

Right then, her phone buzzed in her hand. James’s message popped up on the screen.

James: Wait there. I’m coming to get you.

Emmy didn’t hesitate. She called James back, right there in front of Dean.

He picked up immediately.

She held the phone tight, her voice soft and sweet. “Honey, I’m waiting for you outside Nelson Tower. Be careful, okay?”

When she hung up, she looked up to see Dean’s face twisted with barely contained anger.

She frowned, her tone sharp. “Mr. Nelson already agreed to release Evelina. What are you waiting for? Go get her.”

Dean’s fists clenched by his sides, knuckles white, veins standing out.

A moment later, his hands dropped, all the fight leaving him.

“I’ll come find you after I’ve made sure she’s safe.”

Emmy immediately stepped back, putting distance between them, her voice chill. “Dean, it’s over between us. I’m married now, and I have to keep things clear with my ex.”

The words “ex” and “keep things clear” hit Dean like a punch to the chest.

For a second, it hurt so much he could barely breathe.

His eyes reddened as he stared at Emmy. But with someone else waiting for him, he finally turned and walked away, shoulders heavy with defeat.

Emmy finally let out a long breath.

He was gone. Finally.

Behind her, the last light in Nelson Tower flicked off. Only then did she let herself relax, sinking down on the steps at the door.

When she looked down, she realized she was still holding the suit jacket.

Worried James might get the wrong idea, she quickly handed the jacket to the bodyguard.
